Anyone else have sucky breaks?

ive got a 2003 OZ and whenever i hit the breaks hard they just don't seem to do all that much. I have to quickly downshift to stop fast, sometimes its a little harry.... anyone else have this problem or is it just me?

DJPhattRoc Jun 22, 2003 08:11 AM

i have replaced my brakes at 16k because the pads and shoes were completely gone.....and because its a wear item, dealers dont listen to ur cries

bobaab Jun 22, 2003 08:19 AM

yea, mine feels that way too. i have about 15k on it and it's been at 2 autox events to i think it's time to replace it. im gonna go get sport pads too.

Marzochi Jun 22, 2003 09:13 AM

Ive only got just over 3k on it now, but i noticed it before 1k...

imapunkclaimer Jun 22, 2003 09:19 AM

mines almost 8k and they work very good. i had to slam on my breaks when some ***** stopped dead in front of e=me ad they didnt slip, they held and they still work just like the factory. i have different rims but i dont think that matters. why dont you get some slotted rotors for your brakes.

Marzochi Jun 22, 2003 09:24 AM

Don't they come with slotted rotors standard?

neilschelly Jun 22, 2003 10:34 AM

Definitely not slotted from factory. If you have slotted ones, then I'd guess your dealer did it, but I doubt it. They would have pointed it out to you.

Personally, I notice the brakes fade pretty noticeably, but they aren't that bad. From what I've heard, they wear quickly, but mine are still alright at 9k miles. Perhaps in another few thousand miles, I'll have to replace them.

The Lancer did not score all that well on stopping tests. Although, I haven't had much trouble, I feel that if I can lock the brakes up they must be as strong as the tires are gripping. But then again, I'm coming from driving a 3500 lb Trans Am that did not want to stop at all. But yeah, I'm at 16k and plan on getting sport pads soon, and when the rotors wear out, slotted ones will replace them.

Oh yeah, and I don't notice much heat fade at all on this car. Only once, after an hour-long canyon run did I notice them starting to lose grip.

Sailorgoon Jun 24, 2003 03:04 PM

Fade occurs on my brakes pretty quickly, but stopping power is usually consistant.

I said consistant, not good.

The brakes, even right off the lot, felt weaker than they should have been. I think it's just due to Mitsu's cheapness with the pads they picked.

27k miles and counting, still running the factory pads/shoes/drums/rotors. According to the dealer, I'm still doing alright.

I mean hell, my buddy's mom had an '00 Eclipse V6, put 64k on it and still had 30% left when she bought the Evo, and my mom put 50K on the Cougar in 3 years, just had her first brake job.

Maybe these pads suck, maybe we suck at braking. Either way, we're behind the curve on this.

well i just replaced my factory brake pads at 21,000 and my dad said that they still had alot of life left on them. I got slotted rotors from my dads break wherehouse. The new pads dont grip as well as the factory ones, but i will see how they hold up when we finally get around to replacing the new rotors.

I have 18k on mine and they are still great but they squeak so bad whenever I hit them, it's actually embarassing.. :crap:

I have a brand new OZ and the breaks are terrible. I'm past the "break-in" period so I'm assuming it's not going to get better. I'm getting the RMR Wilwood kit for the front. I have a 4-pot Wilwood front kit on my Legacy and it was a big improvement on that car (though it has an added advantage of 4 wheel discs).

Group buy on the wilwood upgrade???

EVERYONE should know by now that the Lancer has some awful stock brake pads. They're soft, leave tons of debris and wear super fast. If you're hitting the brake squealers, it's time to look into replacement. If not taken care of, you'll wear down to the pad shoe, which'll wear on the disc, which will slowly but surely destroy the caliper in the long run. It's all about upkeep.
