2004 Lancer ES: A/C compressor isn't engaging with the AC/Heater control knob and AC button on the console

I was given a 2004 Lancer ES with over 200K miles as my first car but the air conditioning compressor isn't kicking in.
Is there a way to temporarily bypass the broken Heater/AC control knob on the dash to test WHY the A/C compressor isn't kicking on?
