DCX forms engine venture

LOS ANGELES -- DaimlerChrysler has formed a joint venture with Mitsubishi Motors Ltd. and Hyundai Motor Co. Ltd. to operate a new engine plant in the United States, Reuters reported last week.

The venture, formed in December, completes a previously announced deal for the companies to design and build as many as 1.5 million four-cylinder engines in Japan, Korea and the United States. DaimlerChrysler owns a controlling stake in Mitsubishi and 10 percent of Hyundai.

Terms and a plant location were not disclosed. The plant will begin building engines in 2005, with an expected output of about 600,000 engines a year.

These engines won't appear in any cars until 2004 at the earliest (Hyundai will be the first to use 'em). will not use these engines until 2005.
