06' new GTI
I almost bought an R32, but the Mk.V just leaves me cold. Maybe it will look better in person, because the pictures I've seen all make it look like a Mercedes A-class. IMHO this is what a hot hatch looks like:

I have driven the New GTI, and yes, it does ride alittle too tall...but it is pretty quick. It doesnt FEEL fast...but when you through down the pedal...and you look at the speedometer...it goes pretty quick. With the addition of a more efficient cat-back, and that APR chip...you are running approx. 250hp and 303trq...that would be pretty darn close to competing with an EVO. The steering isnt as sensitive...but it has almost no body roll...and with a 1.5 inch drop...thing could go!
Interior is superb also. Leather seats...back seats fold down for a ton of room, climate control....
and to get back at APR...their chip can be like a boost controller...you can switch back and forth from stock to 250hp and 303 trq!!!

I'd never buy a VW, much less get rid of my Evolution for one. My honest opinion, it looks wack. Especially them plaid seats, blech!!!!
TogueMonster gives two thumbs down for the 06 VW GTI. It might perform okay, but, ummm NO!!!
Even chipped out these cars don't perform like an EVO. Every time I've seen a tuner comparison they still don't even break into the 13's. Car and Driver did one and had tuners bring in these cars with tons of horsepower and they were surprisingly mediocre.
Neuspeeds chipped out 2000. Qtr in 15.3?

because its a front wheel drive (it wont launch like an EVO)
However,
from a role you will have a hard time with a stock EVO... The new GTI is not slow with a chip
~300 TRQ and over 250 HP

when i was stock in my 03 gti 20th...i raced my brothers 04 wrx from a roll...we were neck and neck until 120, when i started pulling on him.
when i had a few basic mods (apr chip, 3" dp, forge 007, mbc)...i stayed even with a 03 evo from a 20mph roll. from a 40mph roll, i pulled 1 car length on him.
i tracked it once and clipped 13.8@103. they are tricky to launch (no lsd, intrusive tc). the evo would have no competition off the line (ie real racing).
I took a lot of cars from a roll in my 1.8t, I'm about dead even w/ a c5 vette from a roll.
the VW's don't like launching. AT ALL. My best 60 ft times were 2.1's... and I broke the factory diff on street tires running 2.1's. it's not comparable to an evo, build quailty is way better but they're completely different philosophies on cars.
APR chipped my car and I like it okay. I'd like to try GIAC but i've had such good customer service w/ APR it'd be hard to switch.

well finally found some time to swing by the vw dealer here to test drive one...
i test drove a dsg equipped gti...i usually hate tiptronic like trannys...but this is a whole different beast. it upsifts super quick, and instantaneous, almost no waiting when i tap the +. downshifts are super smooth as well, the sound of the engine is amazing for a stock car. very gutsy sounding, especially when downshifting. since this was a dealer demo, the salesman let me really get on it. i feel bad saying this...but it frickin felt as fast as my evo from a roll. the steering was very direct, the steering wheel itself is very unique. my hands rested perfectly at the 4 and 8 positions. i could steer it with my knees if i wanted to with the flat bottom! bu it did get a bit high centered when taking corners. the TC never intervened either, it let me have fun. the brakes were very responsive too...not quite as good as the evo's, but still very commendable. i remember reading an article somewhere where some tuner mag said that the stock vw brakes (on the r32) outstopped ALL aftermarket brake companies that had stuff avaiable for the R32...even after 10 consecutive stops! the seats are very supportive, the plaid is kind of rockin. it's standard feature list is really impressive: bi-xenon headlights w/ washers, on board comp, 6 airbags, a arsenal of electronic gremlims to keep you in check, 6 disc in dash cd changer, aluminum trim everywhere, 10 speaker audiosystem, etc.
the only gripes i really had was how cavernous the interior is (this is usually a good thing)...but it felt like my mom's old nissan quest from the drivers seat, but after jacking up the seat (rare for me to do)...it felt better. the driving position is a bit weird, but you get used to it first. the onboard comp is really cool, you can program pretty much all basic functions into it (and directly to your key fob). one cool one was setting the turn signal for quick lane changes, meaning that you barely tap the stalk, and it automatically blinks 3-4 times.
overall i was very impressed. quality is improved throughout the vehicle. it felt just as solid as my 2000 m5. im looking into this car heavily...i almost frickin bought it right there!
