Updates on the BMW 335i
yeah the EVo is more like an "all or nothing" car - you're either going crazy or you're driving it like an accord. the whole ride quality/comfort and noise levels probably amplify that even more, IMHO.
i love that about the Evo though, dual personality. maybe when i'm older (more mature) the 335i's more "tame" driving characteristics will be more attrative.

The 335i handles driving "spiritedly" just as good as the Evo. It's here that I think the BMW may be just a little better than the Evo. It just drives quickly so easily it's stupid. It really isn't until you get to the track and it's limits you would start to see any weaknesses IMO. As far as eating up the miles go it's no contest.
IDK that I would say the Evo has a dual personality as much as the 335. The Evo beats you up unless you are getting after it enough to make the suspension work and is always a little loud and raw. The 335i cruises around like any other car with a nice suspension, quiet engine, all the creature comforts and then when you want to go it hunkers down, makes a pretty damn sweet exhaust note, tells you just what it going to do and goes. Then it's back to normal driving mode after that. The Evo just seems to be always waiting for the "special stage".
Unless you are at the track the numbers really don't matter. It's just a great car to drive. If you enjoy driving you will like the car.
We're about to have a Vishnu dyno day with quite a few of these, and I'm excited. I can't wait to get a ride in one, and hopefully drive one if I get lucky.
Runflats + a heavy RWD manual do not a fast drag racer make on street tires. [/Yoda]
I love my Evo and am not a dashboard molester, but the 335in has a sexy exterior, decent + moddable engine, and luxury appointments an Evo can't dream of. An Evo is a more focused track star, but a 335i as a DD is hard to argue with.

Sergio(Evofunk),
One last thing, this is just for you, here is a few videos and the links in which the BMW 335I leaves the 911turbo, the Porsche Cayman S and the 350Z in the dust on a road track/course driven by a professional driver..
and remember guys, it doesn't even have an LSD as an option. This car(335i) is a true winner.

I know this is a predominately Evo forum so, everyone is concerned about the numbers but, owning both I have to say I really prefer the 335i.
Evo FTW at the track, 335i FTW everywhere else. There are times I think the 335i is faster in the real world than an Evo. The 335i definitely doesn't feel like it is working anywhere near as hard as the Evo to be as fast as it is. Never mind that it is much nicer to ride around in when you aren't racing to wherever.

Evos display too much drama to get all the performance while the 335 comes very close without breaking a sweat: 300lb/ft @ 1300 rpm...out of this world.
Sergio (Evofunk),
Again and in fair defense of the BMW 335I keep in mind:
the 335I does not even have LSD and still manages the equal the M3
Also the 335I weights 200lbs more than the M-3 and still runs as fast
As per your comment: "And that is commendable: a naturally aspirated engine beating a mighty twin turbo with similar displacement...wow."
That has a very logical explanation, first of all, the M3 engine is squeeze to its max, chips, exhaust, header, tuning, and air filters makes very low extra hp on the M-3 engines and that is because the engine is already screaming on rpms and compression ratios being sky high.
On the totally oposite note, the BMW 335I makes as much power at a very conservative factory set up. Vishnu already extracted 114wtq and average of 50whp on a simple piggy back and a cat back(rataining the cats). I would like to see a M3 making an extra 114lb to the wheels and 50whp with a piggy back and a cat back, like I say I would like to but unfortunately it will never happen.
I will post the link to the video in which the BMW engineers talk for a few minutes explaining that they already achieved monstruous power and torque by going with mid size turbos. The reason why the chose the small/tiny turbos is because they follow the company policy of driveability and fast response, they did not want to be associated with turbo lag.
Time will back me up, the 335i with a LSD will torn many cars up starting with its own current M-3 car. This car is very new and BMW owners don't typically use this car for 1/4 mile track, put a decent driver and you will see.
I am a strong believer that the 335I will push the M-3 to the side in some aspects. Oh by the way... the M-3 gets 16/24mpg while the 335I gets 20/29mph city/hwy, another strong reason of superiority.

I take it back, I'll buy one 4 door for my wife
I don't know that I'd agree. If I had a 335 or Evo, I'd want the second car to be something radically different. Namely, a very purposeful sports car; i.e. a Z06, S2000, Boxster S, etc (depending on available funds, of course).
FYI the 335xi should outweigh the 335i by 230 pounds. That is the weight difference between a 328i and 328xi. I understand that BMW makes luxury cars, but I can't believe that they are making such heavy small cars. And then they tout how the coupe is 22 lbs lighter than the sedan?! I wish it was possible to order them with manual seats and some other basic weight savers to at least be able to get the car in the 3300-3400 range. It's tough for a sports car to be agile with how piggy these have gotten for weight. It seems as though BMW adds about 200 pounds each time they have redone the 3 series from e30 to e36 to e46 to e90-92. I know that most BMW drivers don't think about weight, but I wish BMW took into consideration the drivers they have who are still interested in motorsports etc. Sorry for the long post. I have been thinking of doing ED on a 335 and the biggest thing holding me back at this point is the heavy weight of the car.

Rounding the number it was a 3800lbs plus another 150lbs with a full tank of gas(3950lbs). The 335i is not bad at all considering that it weights 3570lbs (coupe).
The car just has too many luxurious things that adds weight (6 airbags, run flat tires, moonroof, then the leather, then the huge 13.7"rotors , dual exhaust with presilencers and cats).
I knew it was coming(weight issue), if you add many things to the car it will eventually add up a lot. Despite all that I still think BMW did very well, it would compare to a 3300lbs if it was a SRT-4 look a like(thin 17x7" with non running flat 205 tires, no moonroof, small rotors, simple mufflers,no leather, etc, etc, etc)
Despite the weight being a handicap I suggest you don't take just the weight as a only and main handicap factor, the car has much much more to offer. At least they tried and put aluminium control arms and aluminium block.
As per the weight difference between the sedan and the coupe, yes I am surprised with such minimal difference but then if you watch the videos the coupe has a 25% stiffer chassi than the sedan. I am sure it is more solidly built(more materials)
my .2c
