Toyota needs an affordable RWD. Seriously.

Not really likely, even if so, the car would be sooo watered down to meet emissions and company image that I doubt it would be worth it.

These are just my predictions and am not saying that any of this is true but I just don't see them trying to bring the AE86 back. If they do, it's not going to be the vehicle that we're going to think of as the AE86.
well the main reason for having the 1zz in place of the 2zzwas for the low end response of the 1zz. it made the MR2 more practical for city driving and what not.

yeah i hope they do come out with a new 86 but it definitely has to be better. maybe they can offer the 20v with maybe a 1.8-2.0l motor instead of the 1.6. nothing wrong with the 1.6 but times are changing and 4 cyl. are getting bigger. you knows mybe they can offer a 3sgte version.

Why even do it?

Look at the market: The miata and S2000 . . . prices are very far apart, and they can't even beat the Chevy Cavalier in sales.

Celica name brand is dead in favor for the Scion brand. Celica GTS -> Toyo Matrix -> Scion.

Just like amongst the 240sx crowd . . . the younger crowd wants a S16, but the old schooler doesn't. Why? Old schoolers fear ugly design, heavier car, and losing the spirit of the S-chassis refinement. Also, why should even Nissan go back to such S-chassis when they are cash-cowing the hell out of the 350z. The little performance car won't be made to beat the 350z in performance refinement.

Why does it have to look like the old 86? That thing looks old and busted. I won't even care if it does not have the same name. It just needs to be lightweight, rear wheel drive and have at least 300 horsepower.

it would be cool to have an updated retro AE86. especially when you pull up next to someone unsuspecting and sees a car that they think is old and busted up! the pic of whatever that is looks cool but is nothing like i would have imagined for an 86. but one thing that made the 86 so famous and very well liked was it's 50/50 weight to power, and its suspension was awesome as well. the new car would definitely have to follow suit on that.

Well, SAE says that you cannot put pop-up headlights on cars anymore, so that's out of the picture. Btw, the a in ae86 is the engine that came with the car (4a) and the e86 stands for the 6th revision of the fifth generation (e80) of the corolla chassis. So it cannot be called the ae86 again.

yeah but it would be cool to have the legendary RWD Corolla GTS back on the roads. Heck they can even call it the Levin since that came with standard headlights instead of the pop ups.

Drift away from the AE86 Trueno. You can have a Miata for the change you have on your pockets. A mazda Miata is RWD convertible, sits low, has a incredibly reliable engine and is also good on gas mileage.

I sold mine for lack of power, note that I never said it was a fast car however there is a world of aftermarket parts for the MIata, Cmon guys, looks forward, the Trueno is kind of obsolete compare to the Miata.

I don't know it seems that we could use an affordable new rwd on the market. I have an 86 and compared to the evo it is an underpowered sloppy machine but it still has some appeal I don't know why though. All 56hp nothing iss tight as far as steering, shifting or the clutch and still it is so much fun to drive. If they decide to resurect the spirit of the ae86 they should offer it still as an n/a but like with the scion's have dealer offered upgrades or maybe offer it as another car in the scion line. Marketing wise a the scion would be better for them.
