tires/wheels

Hey guys, my 2004 Nissan Sentra Spec-V needs tires pretty bad. They are down to 2mm up front and 3mm in back. I was just going to drive it until I traded it in, but since I just lost my main job, I may have to wait for awhile. They may last for a few more months, but as far as trading in, would it make much difference in what I get for it? I mean if I got some good used or new tires now, would I get more for it in trade-in or does'nt it really make a difference?
My wheels are getting rusty too, mostly around the lug nuts. They are aftermarket painted wheels. I already replaced the lug nuts twice since I've had it but they keep rusting (guess that's what I get for not having a garage). Anyway, I know it would'nt be worth it to replace them or having them sandblasted since I plan on trading it in, but do you think I could sand them down with the tires on and paint them myself?
