To the OP,
I owned a 08 Z06 which I heavily modded, I purchased new in March of 08 and it was brutally fast stock, imagina after I spent $7000 on cams, heads, headers, tune, air filter, ported TB and intake manifold..
If you can work out the price I think the Z06 is a great candidate. I would pretty much rule out the Dodge SRT-8 unless you go for the newer SRT-8 WITH 470HP AND 470LB-TQ.
As far is the Shelby GT500, that is another beast although even the regular GTs or the Laguna seca or Boss editions are incredibly fast.
I ultimately wait for the ZL1. You should also add the Cadillac CTS-V. If you like the V-8 rumble, have you consider the Mercedes AMGs with the 6.3 liters? I know is not american but the tuners are squeezing another 140-150 crank HP and another 70-80lb-tq with just a tune , air filters and headers.

out of the three listed i would say the gt500 but you need to wait for the new one with 650 hp...but if the z06 is doable then that is definitely something to think about

I agree with everyone that the Challenger is probably the slowest, and the worst handling, and even probably has the worst interior.
But in terms of sheer menacing looks which harken back to the glory days of muscle cars, I think the Challenger is the only one that gets it 100% right. And let's be real, the true classic muscle cars were all big bad handling heavy boats for their time too, so the Challenger in a sense gets that part right too.

Mercedes Benz AMGs? Nah, they are ruled out. My first criteria is that it has to be an American Muscle. Second, it has to have the heritage classic look. I do agree with some here saying the Challenger is the closest you can get to the original 60s muscle.
Honestly, I am still mixed up. I love the looks of the Challenger as it is the one closest to the classic 60s model, but the ZL1 and the GT500 still got the true essence of an American Muscle. So much torque, noisy, huge, and tons of power. =)
BUT, if only someone would sell me a Shelby Cobra GT350, then that definitely would be my choice, hands down. Only thing is that it is expensive and it is ultra rare, just like the original GT350 of the 60s.

as for the challenger SRT-8, I think it is the 2008 models where all the cars where numbered and have kept their value. first buyers of the challenger where jay leno and carmen electra. the interior of the challenger are similar to all american cars like the GT500, etc. a retro look with modern functionality.
