Excellent writing. It's great to see that kind of passion for a car morph into such a monumental undertaking. The only thing I would say is - and I have no experience with a race team - why don't they have a pre-run checklist that includes things like securing the radio and making sure the e-nannies are off? Seems like a 'Ring run would be approached in the same way a test flight would.
Regardless, I was on the edge of my seat reading a well crafted story.

They're a group of people coordinating a two car / part replacement / repair effort shot at the ring record, I would classify them as a race team. Hell, I have an equipment checklist for my autocross trips and pre-run checklist taped to my console. I don't get how a group trying to put together an effort like this doesn't have an equipment checklist that prevents the wrong wheels from being shipped, missing parts, and TCS from being left on at the start of the run. We're not talking rocket science here. It's excel and 3 minutes.

What's nice about this sort of effort is how it indicates what the car can really do hence making the results more believable.
