05 Sti cheaper 500-550hp daily driver than Evo 8/9?
Hello all!
I have been undecided for months between an evo 8/9 or 05 sti for a daily driver to make around 500/550hp on pump. Of course there are pros and cons to each but, I have ran the numbers and I think it may be cheaper for me to buy the sti and mod it to 500hp. Tell me what you think about my parts calculations:
STI:
Subaru STI: 12,500
Perrin Rotated kit: 1,310
GT35R Turbo: 1,400
IAG Stage 2 shortblock: 3,200
misc: 500
Installation: 1,500
Total: 20,410
EVO 8/9:
Evo 8: 14,500
6466 Turbo Kit: 4,820
Sheepy Transfer Case rebuild: 500
Rear Diff Rebuild: 1500
Total: 21,320
(I cut out all other mods that would be the same for both i.e tuning, brakes, tires, etc.)
Just wanted opinions as to what you all think about this and would the scooby be more reliable too? I am pretty worried about ringland failure, spun rod bearing, etc.
Thanks in advance!

But do you believe that the evo would make more power on a 6466 than the sti on the gt35r?
Also would the evo be more reliable? I understand neither would be at around 500hp but would the vo beat out the sti in reliability?

Whichever car you go with, I recommend you go to the best 'local' shop for your build. There are tremendous benefits to having a single shop handle the build/tune start to finish. Since you are in PA, check out CBRD http://www.cbrdspeedfactory.com/
Maybe give them a call, tell them your goals, and see what they say.

+1 for CBRD. Amazing shop!
I'm saying this as someone who was a Subaru fanboy before they were an Evo owner. For Stage 2-levels of power as a daily driver, it's a tossup - neither car has a great interior but the STi's is better and it's a pretty reliable car generally. But once you start talking about making big power, you are crazy to not buy an Evo. NASIOC is full of threads where people learned this the hard way.

I looked into restacking the plates and that looks like it would work perfectly, thanks!

Also the 4g63 will outrev the Subaru anyday all day, those turbos u mentioned love high revs, and also more reliable. Also a stock oem evo crank is the weapon of choice for 10K revs and drag/Street 2.0 slr setups. Stick with evo u won't regret it.

I think you're looking at this awfully simply.
Also any reason you want a 550whp 4 banger?
For that kind of money im sure you could get something with higher power levels from the factory and it will be more reliable. Just my 2c

The fact that one requires a new "built" engine while the other can do much more on the factory block, should answer your question for you.
My buddy is doing the IAG shortblock in his STI after he grenade the stock one on a basically stock car. I'm looking forward for it to be done so I can drag his *** with a stock 4G63 and a stock 4B11 too.
