Volkswagen's R-GT Project

When we got behind the wheel of the all-new Jetta, our test car was stuck with a 2.5 liter 5-cylinder engine mated to an auto tranny. 2.5 liters sounds cool, but when you realize that only 150 ponies are being sent to the flywheel, you lose interest relatively quickly. So for the Jetta R-GT, the stock 2.5 liter engine was one of the first things to go.

A twin-turbocharged, twin-intercooled 3.2 liter V6 -- a variant of the engine found in the R32 -- replaced the anemic 5-banger. However, as good as the stock R32 engine is, the one found in the R-GT has been beefed up slightly and now puts out over 550 horsepower!

The stock front-drive tranny was also ditched and a six-speed DSG transmission and 4motion drivetrain was put in its place. As if an all-wheel drive system didn't do enough to improve the Jetta R-GT's handling, FIA-approved 3-way adjustable KW shocks were added to all four corners of the car. Speaking of race-approved parts, a WRC-spec Brembo brake system helps to reign in all 550 horses. Not too shabby, eh?

A full aero kit and 19-inch forged aluminum rims wrapped in Michelin rubber add to the aggressive look of the car. But with performance being the focus of this Jetta, race-ready 18-inch DTM-spec Avus wheels can also be equipped for those track days. Don't want to jack up the car to change tires? No need... a trick air-jack system has been integrated into the Jetta R-GT's frame. Sweet!

Wow...doubt we'll ever see one.

If so, I bet it'd come in close to $50k if not more.

The R-GT cars were some of my favorites at SEMA. I hated the new Jetta for its Corollaness, but the R-GT looks way better then the stock cars.

marks03evo Nov 16, 2005 03:25 PM

thats nice...its probably like 60k though..

bullfrg Nov 16, 2005 03:28 PM

We talked to the HPA guys that built it for VW and they said it was $250,000 to build that car, everything is one off custom pieces  .

SLVROZ_03 Nov 16, 2005 05:25 PM

Definitely better w/o the chrome.
