1,500 Stateside R35 GTR's
 

So the preliminary numbers are in....only 1500 GTR's per year............to specialized dealerships.

The long awaited GTR return.........and its going to be a specialty, limited edition car.

YAWN

This car isn't that appealing to me, no matter how hard I try to like it.

Its lost all of its glory, as far as Im concerned.

Gone is the rugged, bad-ass look with an indestructible motor and aftermarket prowess.

Function dictated form, and Nissan is trying to imply that they kept that credo with it, but I just don't see it.

Nissan has come to think of itself as much more than those who can create one hell of a sports car, they seemingly regard themselves as someone who is within the ranks of Porsche and Ferrari.


They've built a car so far out of the reach of becoming a car that can be made unique to each individual....


Like the Evo, they are moving up the ranks and making a car that appeals to a bigger range and a more focused, down to earth range of people at that.

But with both companies, in doing so...they have FORGOTTEN US!

That is, the people who have MADE these cars the legends they rest on.

the new gtr is all hype and will never be like the other generations....i feel the same way about the new evo x as well

The GTR is one of the quickest cars in the world for about $80k. How is that "all hype".

I dont think its all HYPE......i think it will generate real performance numbers and be very competitive.

HOWEVER, its completely targeting the wrong market.

Those who CAN afford it, won't modify it. Those who can't, would want to...

Those who CAN afford it, don't even know its history, or legacy or why it has been labeled as one of, if not the best/fastest production car on the planet.....

Those who can't afford it....know all these things, and are just going to watch them thrown away into "another yuppy machine"

At least, thats what Im worried might happen. It seems already, that the price, how the car was designed and the fact that only 1,500 (supposedly) are being allotted for the US (seems like WAY too few for a car they've been designing for 10 years!)....it would seem that this is a statement by Nissan, and not a monetary venture.

The GTR has never been cheap, the R32 from 1989 cost $31k and the last Z Tune was over $300k, nor had big production volume, averaging about 10,000 per year world wide, and the latest version will be no different. It is a super car in every way and will be a performance bargain. We should be thankful we finally get the option of buying a US version.

Ok, fair enough about the pricing. I still believe that if we only get 1500 units, it will be undeniably a let down, as the mark ups from the dealerships for the first year, possibly two or maybe even more, will be ridiculous.....speculation from around the industry is putting a mark up of 20k-30k already.

Also, realize that over 5 years, the R34's were produced in numbers just north of 64,000 units, and a majority of those went to Japan, I have the numbers somewhere, I'll post them.

From what I've been told, that around 6,000 units a year will be produced....but that comes from someone who works at corporate Nissan USA, and I don't know for sure how credible it is.

I would just say, those two things in themselves put a damper on the car.

it shouldn't be a car of limited numbers....not as limited as speculation would suggest.

Also, pricing aside (70k for a 480hp car isn't bad at all), the dealer mark ups are a big threat.


moving on....an uncrackable ECU (hey, they've said it before and it hasn't been true, Im not worried)

But considering how technical this car is, making mods to it are just going to be a *****.....but who knows? It might be the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I sure hope I can afford one in the near future, to park along my hopeful Evo 9 MR.

We'll see...but Im not holding my breath.

Also, there are several dealerships that are asking for 5,000 dollar deposits, as well as having waiting lists over 50 people long, as it stands right now.

ehh. that should give me more time to save $$. Probably won't get 1 til 2009,2010.

the last time i was in japan the r34 gtr's were under $40k for gtr and in the 30's for a gts r34 us now how do you justify it almost being doubled?

The reason why the price has almost doubled is because the HP has almost doubled. You can't expect to pay 1989 prices for a 2009 car with 450 hp and all the fancy technology that has been invented in the last 20 years. There was a time when you could feed a family for a quarter but you don't see people walking into McDonalds and protesting that they raised their prices since the 1930s. I think people should wait till the car actually gets onto the market before they start saying things regarding its potential, credibility, etc.

Regarding its credibility: The amazingly fast Nurburgring run that had me all hot and bothered was done in a test mule on racing slicks. I'm going to hold off on the "amazingly fast" designation 'til I see some Road Atlanta and Laguna Seca times from independent sources.

...But I'd still sell all my other vehicles to afford the tax and insurance on it if I won one in a raffle or something.

I do believe the true basis of the price resentment is solely from Nissans decision to cater to the likes of people who would be in the market for a Porsche.. After all the car was designed to be better than a Porsche.. Agreed though tremendous change in Nissan can be directly attributed to Renaults stake hold in Nissan.. Which is why there was never a S16 Silvia, or a R35 GT-R that we would recognize and relate to.. You can thank good old Carlos Ghosn for these changes.

Feldguy - I saw production of about 11,000 for the R34 and your 66,000 looks about right for the 32, 33 and 34 combined.

You're right about the premium dealers will tack on. I was quoted $10k additional dealer mark up and that doesn't include all the dealer options they'll add. Hopefully, after the first 6 months or so, they'll be going for list.

Just like the old days, where the competition among Chevy, Dodge and Ford all made each other faster, hopefully Nissan and the GTR will do the same.
