How much does age play into what you'd buy for a car?
I compiled a list of cars that I was interested in, among those were some of the following:
E46 M3, MKIV Supra, SVT Cobra, C5 ZO6... All are great cars, but something is bothering me about having something that isn't the current or close to the current generation model. The M3 is already the hand me down to the new one, the Supra is amazing... just well, OLD. The SVT Cobra is a beast and I don't think the new retro generation has the same "oooo ahhh" but I also look at Mustang generations BEFORE that one and think if I bought one "Psh, mine will be in the same boat soon" and the same goes for the ZO6, the C3 and C4 Corvettes got so out dated and so "David Hasselhoff" so fast. Are cars like these good enough to be the ones people chose over the NEW ones? Or will they too soon get lost in the sauce. I hate looking at cars like a 370Z thinking I may have to get one just in case I want to keep a car for a few years without it being the fossil at the car meets. |
It shouldn't matter at all for a toy. For a daily driver, generally I would want a newer car.
A well maintained 20 year old car says a lot more about the owner than a shiny new one, even if the cars are roughly the same price. Think about it this way: if you see a bunch of Porsches, the rows of 997s are all ignored in the presence of a nice air cooled 70s model. ;) |
80's Porsche turbos make my pants moist, new ones meh (except the gt3rs)
If all you care about is what other people think, then buy a Prius. They are the hottest thing around out here |

It was bone stock but I just said to myself hmm that's cool and none of my friends saw what I was seeing. I like the EVO VIII the same way, only a few years of the car makes timelessness inevitable. |
I think I am a good example. I recently turned 23 years old, bought my EVO when I was 21. Got rear ended and the EVO was gone, now I had the funds to go and buy another EVO, I had my heart set on a X MR, for being a more practical DD. However being 23 years of age, working full time, going to school full time money is tight. I worked my ass for the EVO and right before I was gona go buy the X I stopped in a Honda dealer. Ended up getting an 09 Civic.
Monthy payments are 320 (brand new 09 civic EX coupe) 05 EVO 8 was 485 a month. Insurance well I am on a family plan with the parents but it did get cheaper. Gas mileage haha makes me laugh 30+ MPG, 0 maintenance up to 100k miles except oil and brakes (dealer gave me 5 free oil changes) now with the money im saving on this Civic im ready to move out and get my own place. Fast cars will always be around, and I will always have a passion for them. Besides when I get older and more established with myself I will be able to build the car of my choice to my exact specs, and won't have to cut corners due to income. My .02$ |
