Have you considered a 95-99 E36 M3. Perfectly balance. Wonderful inline 6. You can also do an LS-1 swap if you want a V-8. They are great cars and can be had for around $10k for a fairly nice one.

Are you looking for something new or used? Either way the Hyundai Genesis might be worth a look.

This. I was looking for one of these until I found my current car. An E36 M3 is a great option with tons of potential regardless of how far you go in mods. I would be driving one right now if I hadn't gotten a ride in a C5 Z06, which I ended up buying. That's another option, too. I paid $21k for a 2004 Z06 w/ $3k in mods and an extra set of rims / Rcomps. It's not as practical as an M3 though.

Not hard to find a cheap older Miata if you're just looking for something cheap/fun to track on the weekends. Plus it has the bonus of massive aftermarket support if you plan to race it.

Another car you might consider is the MR2 Spyder and you can add mid-engined to your list as well.

Both the MR2 Spyder and the Miata are incredibly cheap and simple cars to run. You can pick either up for around 5 grand. They are both very light as well, so tires will last much longer.

This image also might help.

As a former S2k owner, I still can't get them out of my head! I'm continually browsing them online with constant thoughts of picking another one up.

This...

I pondered getting a new FRS/BRZ ever since they were announced. But having tracked my 01 S2K before getting into the Evo...I always wanted another one. Now that they can be had for under $15K in really good shape, it's hard to justify the FRS/BRZ even at their "low" price point.

I owned an s2000, and test drove a few miatas/mx5's before buying the s2000. S2000 has better seating position, ergonomics, better stock engine exhaust sound than miata. Mx has lesser entry price. U could probably push the mx5 on the streets more since it has less power. But I preferred the s2000 all the way. They look much better too. Best shifter feel in the world. But if buying new than the frs wouldn't be bad

I'd look into the 370z. Always liked those cars!

I love the s2000. I will never sell it. So many people sell them and end up rebuying one after they realize they made a mistake.

BRZ

My 2 cents.

Take some cars out and test drive them, Miata, BRZ, FR-S, S2000, etc.

If you want something on the cheap side, maybe consider a clean 240SX if you can still find one. I rather enjoyed mine, not really fast, but super fun to drive. Sadly, drifting took off for a while and those poor cars got abused something bad. :(

I actually ended up buying a used 2010 3.8 l Genesis Coupe earlier this week. It came with an intake and cat back exhaust already installed. 6 speed manual, I bought the car as a daily driver, with the intention of using the Evo more as a track car.

I am overall very impressed. The power is good and comes in early in the rpm. The car handles very well, transmission feels good and the ride is very solid with no noticible body role through hard turns. It also sounds really good, nice and deep tone to it.

Overall I would recommend checking out the genesis if you are in the market for something new.
