Going new car - 2006+ Miata NC // 2013 FRS
coming from an evo x , wanted something lighter and roadster like.
Almost purchased a 2013 frs, but then I noticed the 2006+ Miata's that nobody likes. I finally got around to test drive a FRS and I must say, its a fun car to drive, handling//interior//steerwheel// all of it felt great. Yes it felt very low on power but it was a blast to just drive around. I havent driven a 2006 + Miata NC yet but those sound fun too, a bit smaller than the frs but feels like a roadster, saw some specs and videos of autox guys on a 2006 miata with cosworth super charger and I was impressed. anyone test drive a 2006+ miata before? Also , I do have a dd small suv on the side. |
My buddy just picked up a BRZ and WOW, what a fun little car to drive. If I didnt have a little one to drive around I would be all over one of these as a DD type car.

Personally I'd go with a Toyobaru simply for the slight increase in functionality (bigger trunk and a back "seat" to throw **** into).
|
I don't know anything about Miatas but I have heard people love them. I agree with otter, I'd take the FRS over it in a sec though. What about an S2000?
|
S2000 or RX8 both are good small light fun cars. And s2k is much quicker and you feel it.
|
I've been told (by WestSideBilly) that the S2000 is a great car as long as you keep it a street car. He did not have kind words about it as a track toy.

I'd decide now if you're going to keep the car stock and if you are, make sure to compare stock FRS to stock Miata. Also note, many people have a hard time taking Miata drivers seriously  |

His comments were geared more towards cost vs. reward, I believe.

I have a GT-R, Evo 8, and a 2006 MX-5...the Miata is probably the most fun of the three on the street. You feel like you are going fast even when you are not, and it is so light and tossable that I can't wait to get back into after I drive the other two. Plus top-down in the summer can't be beat! I have never driven the BRZ, and it does look like fun, but all else being equal, the convertible top is too much fun to sacrifice...

This is a bit of thread revival, but this thread really isn't that old. Did you finally decide what you were going to do?
I have a 2011 Miata. I actually chose it over an Evo last year. Sometimes I wish I had gotten the Evo, but it's more because of the practicality than anything. I've also been considering the FRS/BRZ... mostly for the back seats. The Miata really is a lot of fun. And the fact that is not as popular is something I really like. But, no car ticks all the boxes, there is always something you give up to achieve something else. I did write a story on necessary mods to the MX-5 just last week. If you do decide to buy one, read the article. You might want to factor in those extra expenses into your decision. This is it: Mazda MX-5 NC Essential Mods And since I'm at it, about 6 months ago I published the reasons why I bought the MX-5 over the Evo. Here's the article: Mitsubishi Evo X vs Corvette vs Boxster vs Miata Please update and let me know what you decided to do. I'm curious. Like I said however, you might be going from Evo to Miata - But people change all the time. I might at some point go from Miata to Evo or FRS / BRZ. That's just how it is. |

I picked up a BRZ as my DD great car fun to drive 30MPG. It is lacking in power, but that is what the EVO is for. I should be getting my vortech S/C in the mail today, that should give it a nice kick in the ass and make the BRZ more fun to drive.
Miata, never driven one, always been a chicks car. |
Miata+convertible = nope

I've driven all 3 gens of Miata, all sorts of S2000 (n/a, supercharged & turbo) and an auto FRS (manuals were sold out at the dealer) and here's my take.
I'd take the S2000 out of the 3. It's ever bit as focused as the FRS (Miata is too softly sprung for my taste), has better brakes than the FRS (read that they go soft in a few laps) and is quite a bit faster than either stock for stock (5-7mph in the 1/4). The very fact that it can handle 500whp+ stock block and already have an established aftermarket base is just icing on the cake . You can buy a nicely modded low mileage one for less than a new FRS and lose less money in the long run since the depreciation has already tapered. Plus I think the S2000 looks better than either, stock or modded. |
