Now I'm thinking about a Boxster S

Well, I thought I had it narrowed down to either an EVO or a 350z to replace my SRT but now I'm thinking about a Boxster S. I really like small, nimble cars and have always dreamt of having a Porsche. The Boxster S has everything I want.....good handling, good power, a convertible top, great looks, and the exceptional Porsche build quality and durability. My buddy who has a 350z also has a Boxster and said that if he was made to choose he'd keep his Boxster any day. The Boxster is the kind of car that you get and keep forever like jewelry and I'm thinking this may be the way to go. You can get a good used one in the low $30k's and most have the 100k mile extended Porsche warranty also. The downside is that maintenance and mods are expensive.....but hey, it is a Porsche. I'm loving the hard tops and widebody kits too:

i can think of a lot of other cars id rather have than that for the money. i mean its cool and all but if youre looking for speed........my bro has a WRX with a grand in it and he can rip those things up all day.

but as we all know, the Boxster is the poor mans Porsche. If your budget is 30k, would you consider an older model Carrera?

If you're pretty set on the S, however, remember that the labor on the car is going to cost a pretty penny . . . since the car needs to be on lifts for any sort of maintenance whatsoever.

Spend $30K on a used 911

lol....I always wondered why people say that? Is there a mid-engine convertible version of the 911 that weighs only 2800lbs that I missed somewhere? I don't want a 911, that's why I'm getting a Boxster......they serve completely different purposes. I could get a used NA 993 for the same price range but it's not a dedicated roadster.

Great car, if you don't mind getting pounded in the ass by Porsche. The S2000 has everything the P-car does, minus the logo and exorbitant price. At that, I'd definately get a Boxster S before I got a 350Z 'vert.

It's a sweet car to say the least, but that price tag would keep me from picking one up. IMO there is more to be had out there for less money. S2k!

check out this Boxster vid....man, what a nice exhaust sound!!!! (Note: this guy has a 911 motor dropped in and has 340hp in a 2800lb car....nice!)

S2k not an option for me......it's so small inside I can't even get into it. The Boxster is like a Lincoln compared to the S2k as far as room goes.

They're nice cars. You can't compare them to something like the Evo, it's a totally different car. My "poor" dad has a boxsterS, and he loves it. Sure my Evo will smoke it in any type of race, but hell... at the end of the day, it's still a convertible Porsche! My only issue with it is here in NoVa, you see as many Boxsters on the road as Civics... and it's mostly professional women driving (not a knock on professional women, I like 'em!), but I think it's lost it's prestige as a drivers car and has become an entry "status" fun-car.

I would go with a 80 to 83 930 turbo. If you can find a 4 speed jump on it. Those cars a nasty fast. I know, I had one. :)

I always hated that "poor mans porsche" crap too. My fist car was vw/porsche 914 that though slow as poo, could kick a same year 911 butt in an autocross and stay on its bumper on a twisty canyon. Later, had a 944S2 Cab. which I chose over a 911 becaue it looked better in my opinion, was rarer and would outhandle a same year 911 anyday... just more fun to drive. Down a bit on horsepoer, but will allmy driving on mountain roads, it was as good or better as a 911. hardly would say a $50k plus car is a poor man's anything. But the Evo is MUCH better...really, have driven boxter extensively (and my 944 had almost identical performance) and boxter S extensively... and I really love my Evo much more. It is so much more fun!!...I am a huge P fan, and hope to get a C4S in a few years... but I would not give up my Evo for it... just too much fun.

If the only thing the Boxster S has going for it over the EVO is the name, then that's not enough justification to get it, IMHO.

I just don't get the at-the-end-of-the-day-you-still-have-a (insert exotic here). Do you think that is enough to console the owner of an exotic after his car just got raped?

The EVO is superior in price (new), performance, practicality, and moddability.

Reliability is probably a toss-up, alot of it depends on how aggressively you drive and how well you maintain it. (You can't do high-rpm launches in a 993 or 996 Twin Turbo and expect the clutch and drivetrain to last very long either).

You also have to consider how much you are willing to risk pushing your car to its limits. Even most wealthy exotic car owners get nervous about driving their cars at 80-90% of the car's limits. It's much easier to swallow crashing your $30k car than a high-priced Porsche or similar machine.

Maintenance-wise, people complain about $60 oil changes, try $100+ for the Boxster.

Ultimately, I think you'll be able to enjoy the EVO alot more on the track and on the street!

A Boxster isn't a real Porsche. Go for an older 911 if your goin Porsche.
