EVO's passing emmisions.....
 

I'm gonna put the stock exhaust back on, maybe add a bit of fuel across the board and hope I pass....

Its next year, but I was wondering if I added cams or a turbo kit later on if Id still pass etc...

any tips would help :)

I heard on newer cars they just hook up the obd-2, as long as you dont have a CEL you will pass.

im not that sure, I havent been to emmisions in about 4 years (traded in my RSX just before I got emmisions check)....

I did do my moms 4runner emmisions and they did attach the muffler for readouts.... dunno if this is because its a 1996

Last time I was in (not in the EVO) they did a visual inspection for the presence of a cat and also looked at the fuel filler cap. Then they hooked up to the ODB and looked for codes. If for some strange reason they want to put you on the dyno be sure to let them know it is AWD because they have separate lanes for 2WD and 4WD.

they cant hook up the car and see you were running bad emmisions the past few months right? like a black box or somthing recorded in the car?

no, little if any historical data is stored except for CEL Snapshots, just make sure you've cleared your codes and reset the ECU a week or so before..

Some states DO have a tailpipe sniffer test **AND** obd-II if your car cannot be put on a dyno (Some states have AWD Dynos too)

I have an AWD here, clear codes and reset ECu, disconnect the battery?

also what about the cams and such? will they affect it?

Im changing the hole exhaust anyways before then

First they can't put the car on rollers. Because its AWD. they only use cars on rollers for FWD or RWD.

they will: hook it up to ECU, Check your gas cap, see if you got the cat, and rev few times, Let them know that the car is AWD.
you can leave the catback, just make sure you got stock cat on with
downpipe not sure when comes to cams.

Cams with 265 duration or less will have a good chance of passing emissions than cams with over 265 dur. with a properly working catalyst. But fine tuning plays a large role in passing emissions and having an Evo thats a blast to drive while passing the smog test.-------EVO's have greater potential in its mild state, but tuning is the key to open doors of hidden powers you desire---------

As an ex-smog technician the cams will/not affect the emissions that much. It depends on the duration of the cams and the emission limit on the emission. Meaning if the Evo's emission limit is like 200 and you have like 130 with the cams, you still pass. Of course don't tell them you have a cam. As far as the exhaust, it will not increase the emissions on any car as long as it's a cat-back. Cat-back systems are usually dealing with noise levels. If your car is running clean so anything after the cat. is clean also. Meaning, a catback is nothing more than a pipe. It will not increase any emissions.

cams with alot of duration = valve overlap = unburned fuel escaping to the exhaust valve = failed emissions.
The cat can only clean so much Hc's and Co's.
Evo's are considered as LEV's (low emission vehicles)

Delaware requires only an OBD-II scan for 96+ cars.

I've got experience failing emissions in maryland....you're gonna fail with those cams....that's my guess. And they do put the car up on rollers, they put my GSX up on rollers every time i've gone. (which is only twice). I used to live in NY....its even worse there than maryland, at least in md you dont have to do it each year. Also, I dont see why you need to test you're new evo already. I'd call and make sure u even have to test the car. Ex-honda was right with the exhaust statement though, they have nothing to do with passing or failing unless you gut the cat or put on a delete pipe. I usually put the silencer into my N1 though before I get it tested just to shut the car up a little.
