Are you getting worse gas mileage with cams?
Provided similar driving styles, are you guys experiencing worse gas mileage with cams? I commute 70 miles a day so if there truly is a hit gas mileage wise, I will have to stay away.
yeah i'm getting around the same, 13.5 and my clutch is new so now slipping issues here. Mostly after getting the Walbro fuel pump my mileage suffered, then i got cams and they seem to suck more gas down. However, it could be because its just so much fun to haul *** with the new cams and tuning. Even after the tune, i'm getting similar mileage. highway is a different story, i get close to 22mpg there
My mpg has increased since cams (264's). I also had my ecu "xflashed" by vishnu @ the same time too.
My evo is my commuter, 100% city driving:
100% stock = 185 miles per tank +/-3
tbe, cams & xflash = 210 miles per tank +/-5

It's all in the timing and tuning.

It's all in the timing and tuning.

For starters, I timed my cams deliberately to deliver a lot of torque and force the torque peak down in the power band. Because the car is so damn torquey, I can drive even in hilly terrain and never need to be in a boosted situation to maintain speed. I don't know what the static cylinder pressure is, but the starter is telling me it's a lot.
Secondly, I drive the car very sanely. At freeway speeds, I maintain 75-80mph. Again back to cam timing, with the torque peak occurring at a relatively low 4400rpm, the efficiency at 80mph (~3500rpm) is closer to peak VE, which gives snappy response AND improved fuel economy.
In short, it feels very V8-ish, not like a whiny 4cyl that needs to be constantly shifted.
