Finally Installed My GSC Cams!!!!

Hey guys, school is finally out and i thought today was the perfect day to install my cam, cam gears, and headstuds. I got a lot of advice and tips from Evoisdream (thanks for putting up with me!) so i felt like i was pretty prepared. I had a couple buddies helping my out, and we all seemed pretty pumped about the install......that is, until we opened up the valve covers, and then everything went downhill. The Evo moto guide, while helping out tremendously, doesn't help with the actual labor involved! While most people can do it in 4 hours, it took us about 6-7 hours, and we didn't even get to the headstuds!!! Man, the cam gear bolts, the cam bearing caps, and the CAS were a bit** to losen!

Anyways, we installed GSC 272/272 and fidanza cam gears, which are currently set to 0,0. I was very nervous on the initial start up, but the car started up without a hitch and idled exactly like stock! I let it warm up for about 10 minutes and then revved it up a bit. Damn, that thing sounded like a freakin monster! My buddies were amazed at how it resembled that of a cammed up V8! I opened her up a little, but no revving past 5,000 RPM, and the thing pulled like crazy......i could instantly tell how much of a difference! After opening her up, my idle was really lopey, and my exhaust was purring like a freakin tiger! When i parked it, i noticed some tapping noise coming from the valve covers, and feared that the there was an issue with the lifters, which i did not bleed. But after i shut it off and started it up a few minutes later, the tapping was gone. I'm not sure if the lifters readjusted themselves or what? Oh well, my car is in dire need of a tune, which I will hopefully get by next week or so.

I still have a walbro fuel pump and ARP headstuds to install, which i will hopefully do next week sometime! Sorry for the long post, i just had a lot to say!

Yea, ive heard that the -4, -1 setup is the best for straight 272s......how do u adjust the timing? Do u have to losen the 5 little bolts on the cam gears and then just move them degree by degree?

Anyways, i did hear the ticking noise, in fact, so did all my buddies, but then we never heard it again. I drove home doing 80 MPH the entire way and i didn't hear it. Oh well, I'm hopefully gonna get a custom tune on my UTEC, but im not sure when thats gonna happen !

adjusting the gears u just losen all 5 and then take a 17 i beleave to the center cam bolt that goes through them look at your marks and line it up... its really simple do 1 at a time and then tighten it and then do the other

Ok, so I adjusted my cam gears today from 0, 0 to -4, -1 (as recommended by most people with a straight 272 set-up). Made sure everything was perfect and started her up. Everything was perfect through the warm up, so i took her out for a test drive.

Well, after about 5-10 minutes on the road, my idle was very similar to stock, except that it was pretty lopey, somewhat similar to a cammed up V8. I could feel my car vibrate more than usual, but nothing too obnoxious. At leasts that what i thought, but i soon found out otherwise. As i was stopped at a red light, some old lady in a buick pulled up next to me and she looked pissed off or something. She motions for me to roll down my window, so i do. She tells me to turn it down! I ask her "turn what down?" She tells me to turn down my "boom box!" Now, keep in mind that i my stereo is completely stock and i didn't even have my radio on! So i tell her i dont even have a "boom box!" She gives me this nasty glare, so i just gun it as the light turnes green. Pulling up to the next red light im freakin laughing my a$$ off at her! I guess my car is pretty loud with my cams! Hopefully i won't get pulled over for noise issues!

LMFAO you didn't bleed the lifters but you knew you should have. That takes the cake.
I'll see you in a couple weeks when you post up a "My car is ticking" thread.

Actually i don't have any ticking noises whatsoever. My exhaust note is just louder. Trust me, I listened very hard for ticking noises and i didn't hear anything. I did when i had just installed my cams, but the noise went away after a few minutes. The car just needs a tune in order to smooth out the idle, it's just now it's pretty lopey, but that's normal with the 272's. I didn't bleed the lifters mainly cause i couldn't even find them!
