The Evo 9 5 speed comes with shorter gear ratio than the Evo 8 5 speed.
It is not like the 5 speed feels laggier than the 6 speed on the road course, both(5 and 6 spoeed) should perform very well.

The first 3 gears of the 5 vs 6 speed in the EVO are the same... unless you go on a long, high speed road course I dont you'll notice a difference

The dealer I ordered my RS from had an MR. When I went to put the deposit down my salesman wanted me to take it out even though I wasn't going to get it. In comparison, the RS and MR have the same shifting action and feel. Unless you are going over 110 in autocross I don't think there's much of a difference, you can search on here to get the exact ratios.

If you want the wing, plan to keep the stock suspension and wheels, and want the aluminum roof as well as the "relaxed" highway ride of the 6-speed the MR is a great deal.

greg I"ll still be there!! just trying to decide if its worth upgrading to a 9??

so you saying that the 5 and 6 are the same 1-3rd??? I spend most of the course in 2nd gear most of the time.

Are the bilsteins worth the extra money?? I wish the stock 9 still came with hid and fogs. cheap asses!

Actually, I think the 3rd on the 6 speed is a touch shorter than the 5.

The Evo 8 MR has a 3% shorter 3rd gear and 7% shorter 4th gear. This comes straight from the car magazine which they tested the Regular Evo, the RS and the MR and the MR won on the road course.

I am absolutely not certain about the diferences on the Evo 9 though however I do know that the 5 speed gears on the Evo 9 has been shortened

since simply LINKING the correct info isn't enough, i'll turn around and quote it.

MR: 40.9 61.2 83.0 108.2 137.1 171.7

so as you can see, 1st is a little longer, 2nd is the same. 3, 4, and 5 are shorter.

@ 75 mph in the 8, you're doing just under 3400 rpm
in the 9.. 3550 or so.
MR: just under 3300

More or less, the new IX has the same first 4 gears that the MR does (within 2mph), whereas the MR will pull more in 5th (above 110.)

That kinda puts the debate to rest.

That being said, i love my 6 spd on track

and this is how I back up my statements(two posts up):
read page two:

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...os/index1.html

this is a copy/paste of page two:

It's not so easy to simply ascribe the RS's acceleration advantage to just lower curb weight. Illogically, the MR, 10 pounds heavier than the VIII, nipped the Evo VIII to the same point (and, in retrospect, was quicker during our earlier quarter-mile runs as well). Likely, the MR's fractionally closer-ratio six-speed gear set helps (third's a scant three percent shorter, fourth offers a seven-percent advantage), and the shifts are maybe microseconds quicker due to the MR's Teflon-coated cables and a better-weighted knob that's almost vacuumed into the next slot. But there's an additional mass effect going on here you're less likely to realize--the wheel's rotational inertia. The MR's BBS aluminum alloys are each 2.8 pounds lighter than the Evo VIII's and RS's standard Enkei's, and when accelerating (or decelerating), a rolling wheel presents more effective mass than a simple scale can measure, multiplying the value of the BBS's weight saving.

Obviously we are talking about the Evo 9 on this topic though...

gotcha, the numbers i posted were from putting the ratios in a calc that was listed on this site.

i totally didn't see the mention of autox in the title, for that, it doesn't matter a lick. really no difference in gearing til about 110, where the 8 has a longer 4th, and the MR has a much shorter 5th.
