2006 wrc season (disscussions - update - recap)

hi guys... i tried looking for a thread that talks about the wrc but wasn't really able to find it... i found some threads talking about certain events that occured but nothing discussing the season up to date so i thought i would start one... maybe post some pics here and there... i'll try to keep it updated as much as possible as we progress through the season and put up some links to web pages you can visit to get some info...

don't forget to visit the official wrc website at http://www.wrc.com/page/Home/0,,10111,00.html
also this is the up to date standings after this weekend's race in mexico http://www.wrc.com/page/DriverStandi...1~2006,00.html

MONTECARLO

ok so we start out the season in montecarlo which has been dominated by the french superstar loeb in the citroen for the past 3 seasons... this year he's not backed by the manufacture but managed to keep almost his entire crew with him... he was the safe bet for the start of the season but a turn of events, the crash on the second day, saw gronholm take the lead in his new 06 ford focus... gronholm switched manufactures for 06 after a very disapointing 04 and 05 season... this year montecarlo played hard to get with tricky weather conditions at every stage taking down many drivers, among them peter solberg... the swede had high hopes this year in the new 06 sti but a disspointing 1st round as he had to retire on the second day...

1st round winner

1 - M. Gronholm
2 - S. Loeb
3 - T. Gardemeister

SWEDEN

the 2nd round brings us to the cold lands of sweden where ice and snow rule supreme! with temperatures well below freezing sweden can prove to be one of the more mentally strenuous courses... slippery roads at every corner will undoubtedly be the cause of many crashes here... going into the stage peter solberg was the man to beat as he finished 1st last year... here the swede wanted to reign victorious once again and leave his 1st round tragedies behind him... unfortunatly a jump over a crest caused damage to his drive shaft and forced him to retire on day 1 and a slide just 20ft from the start placed him well at the end of the standings... the run of bad luck taking it's tolls on the subaru team as atkinson hits a tree not far from the start dropping him way back in the position standing... the subaru team is off to a bad start and looking to the next round in mexico to hopefully redeem themselves... the stage is set for the focus and citroens xara to fight for the 1st position... but an unproperly fastened hood almost cost loeb the race... luckily it shot up on a road section but it managed to damage his windshield... miko hirvonen who held 3rd position all day was forced to retire at the end of day 1 where a spectaular jump over collins crest caused a malfuntion in the water pump overheating his engine... his retirement leads us to the main fight of the sweden round between gigi galli (yeah!! go gigi!!!) and fellow mitsu driver carlsson who chased after 3rd place always tenths of a second off of eachothers pace... this battle saw them switch places time and time again leading to a great finish where carlsson took 3rd place from galli on the last stage of the 3rd day by 6.2 secs... loeb tried to match gronholms pace but was unable to do so proving that gronholm was king of snow and ice... loeb once again had to settle for 2nd place and he looks ahead to mexico for his 1st win of the season...

2nd round winners
1 - M. Gronholm
2 - S. Loeb
3 - D. Carlsson

Day1

Hot desert roads, high elevations and rough terrain are just a few of the adversities that the wrc drivers will be faced with in this round of the Corona Rally Mexico. As many of you might know the heat does not benefit the engine and performance of the car but in addition to that the Rally Mexico has some of the highest peaks in the whole season reaching summits of 18000 feet. This high elevation is characterized by low density oxygen, which the cars desperately need to mix with the fuel for the engine to work efficiently. The Corona Rally Mexico takes place in the province of Guanalajato near the city of Leon. Here the harsh conditions took their toll on Loeb last year, 1st damaging the brush under guard and then severally damaging the rear right wheel. Sebastian will want to forget last years horrible event and prove himself as the world champion by taking his 1st win of the 06 season, but Solberg last years Corona Rally Mexico winner will keep an eye on him and fight for 1st place with all his strengths. Solberg already off to a bad season is also eager for a 1st win here in Mexico. But more bad luck for the Norwegian driver as David Latworth, head of the management team, moved on to other projects. Latworth helped bring Solberg to victory in the 04 season and has been a strong support for him ever since. But on to the 1st day of racing it seams that the run of bad luck has ended for the Subaru team as Solberg manages to win the 1st 4 stages of the day. He’s closely followed by Miko Hirvonen who later in the afternoon makes a move on the Subaru driver by closing the gap down to less then 5 secs. Loeb not off to a good start as he’s one of the slower times of the top 5 drivers closely followed by Gronholm. Later in the day he manages to overtake Loeb and set a good margin between him and the Citroen, he now looks ahead to his fellow ford co driver Miko Hirvonen. In an attempt to make up time he pushed to hard on one of the stages and veered of the road wrecking the rear suspension forcing him to retire for the day. Similar fate was followed by Subaru driver Atkinson who hit a rock dragged onto the road, damaging his wheel and losing control crashing off course. This will now put him far down in the standings. Back to Loeb who has changed his Citroen setup and will be looking to over take Hirvonen in day 2 after catching up to them in the later part of day 1.

Day 2

On to day 2 and the 1st to start will be Mathew Wilson in a private Ford. Wilson is an upcoming driver and is having a great round here in Rally Mexico, but the 2nd day will not be kind to him. He will hit the inside barrier pushing him off to the outside of the next curve off the road severally damaging the car, for Wilson it’s all over. Loeb, now in 3rd place, feels the setup on his Citroen is perfect and is finally running at full pace. Each stage he cuts down his time getting him closer to Miko Hirvonen in 2nd. Hirvonen on the other had finds himself off the road early in the morning after putting himself in a similar situation as Wilson. For the young Fin its all over, a huge disappointment after a great 05 season in a private Focus. Son now we find Loeb who inherits 2nd place from Hirvonen and is right on Solbergs heels. Solberg is up next but the intense heat and the gruesome road conditions are taking a toll on his tires dropping almost 5 secs. Loeb takes the lead with only a .7 secs separating him from Solberg and Manfred Stohl in 3rd but over 2 mins behind them. The highlight of the second day come late in the afternoon where Solberg reports to have hit a dog causing damage to his radiator but nevertheless he is quicker then loeb on that stage taking back 1st position. Solberg is not the only one to have an encounter of the close kind as we find Atkinson have a run in with some horses luckily he manages to avoid them. Marcus as well only this times its goats and one more Stohl reports to have hit a cow. Towards the end of the day Solberg who managed to keep the lead so far is starting to feel the strain on his tires again and looses 1st place to Loeb. But Loeb also has an encounter with a herd of cows causing him to loose some time can the Norwegian catch up? No with just 15km left on the course a jump over a crest leads him to a bad landing damaging his power steering costing him a massive 25 secs! So with the end of day 2 we find Loeb in the lead followed by Solberg 28.5 secs behind and Stohl in 3rd just under 4 mins behind.

Day 3

On the 3rd day it's business as usual for the drivers. We start out the day with Marcus Gronholm who after crashing on the 2nd has managed to work his way back up the leader board and is now looking to get 8th place in the scoreing section. While 8th place won't get him many pys in the driver standings he will manage to pick up some manufature pts for his Ford team. Atkinson, who if you remeber also had troubles on the second day, will be restarting today and hopefully manage to reach the scoreing section. But as the day progresses problems start to rise. There is no wind to be seen which means all the dust shot up by the previous car rmains floating in the air. This is obviously a problem for the drivers as it lowers their visability making it harder to push on the road. But lets move on to the fight for 1st position. We left with Loeb leading over Solberg yesterday by over 28 secs will the Norwegen be able to catch up today? It seams as though the bad luck that had pleagued them the 1st 2 rounds is back. Solberg looses his breaks and is forced to slow down his pace resulting in a loss of 12.6 secs in that stage putting him at just over 50 secs behind Loeb. The hope for a win here in Mexico are now left in the dust but the Subaru team is still happy that their leader car was able to place in 2nd. So far the only car to have reported no problems is Loebs Citroen as it takes another winning stage. With the end coming near we now have solid confirmation that both Gronholm and Atikinson have made it back into the scoreing section in 8th and 7th respectivly, but by the end of the day Atikinson repots a problem with his power steering, it seems to be the same that Solberg had reported on day 2 but the young Australian driver manages to hold on to his position and place 7th. So as we stand this puts Loeb in 1st followed by Solberg and Stohl in 3rd.

3rd round winners

1 - S. Loeb
2 - P. Solberg
3 - M. Stohl

DRIVER STANDINGS

1 - S. Loeb 26pts
2 - M Gronholm 21pts
3 - M. Stohl 11pts
