Loeb wins second straight Corsica Rally
PARIS -- World champion Sebastien Loeb, driving a Kronos Citroen, won the Corsica Rally for the second successive year on Sunday.
Frenchman Loeb has taken the last three rallies after victories in Mexico and Spain.
Ford driver Marcus Gronholm of Finland finished second, 29 seconds adrift of Loeb on the Corsican asphalt.
Gronholm, winner of the first two rallies of the season, trails Loeb by 11 points in the world championship after five rounds.
"I did not win all the stages like last year and it was not easy," said Loeb. "I really had to fight to beat Marcus."
Loeb has 46 points while Spain's Dani Sordo, his Kronos Racing teammate following the withdrawal of Citroen's works team last year, is third on 20 after claiming third, one minute 48.7 seconds off the pace.
"It's my second successive podium. I'm happy. It's incredible," said Sordo, who was second in the Catalunya rally two weeks ago.
Finland's Mikko Hirvonen, in his Ford, finished fourth 10.5 seconds behind Sordo. Frenchman Alex Bengue, driving a BSA-Peugeot, took fifth place.
Petter Solberg's hopes of cutting Loeb's lead in the championship standings ended on Friday when the Norwegian's Subaru went off the track during the first stage.
The former champion, 36 points behind Loeb, ended the rally more than six minutes down on the Frenchman in 11th place.
