at what point in modding is Tuning NECESSARY?

Hey everyone and thanks in advance for your input. Im new to turbo'd cars and wish to learn everything i can from the X. So like that title says, what mods can we do without a tune? UICP, CBE... I understand that with a tune we maximize the hp potentian of every mod. But i know that with every mod its not NECESSARY to tune for it. When i mean necessary is the fear of going too lean and KABBOOM. haha.

i would say after reading, anything after a intake and exhaust.

you could always do some data logging after modding and that would tell you too.

it helps if you have an idea of how much you want to spend. The cheapest way to go is to get all your bolt on's, then a tune. Otherwise you'd have to tune a couple times to get the most out of the boltons.

after you get an intake for sure!

exhaust + ebc are ok without a tune, BUT you wont reap the full benifit until you atune...

i just dont want to mess with the ECU in case she needs to get some warranty work. Trust me, i am so tempted to start tuning her. I just would like to pick up some more hp's and throttle responce with out risking goin too lean. Im not planning to do anything crazy and i know that the potential with a tune is much better. oh and can one of you guys decode ebc for me hahah
Heres my list of mods for the future:

Exhaust
test pipe
UICP
Intercooler

i already did the cone filter mod and the waste gate actuator is turned 3 times and thats all its been done to her. So just to clarify, that would be fine without a tune?

Thanks again guys.
