mode23... I screwed a buddy...
I ****ed it up. I did it on my car fine and a buddy came over and I fubar'd him. I was in a rush and I forgot to compare the numbers when I was showing him how to do it. So we ended up flashing his car with the "mode23" but with the wrong starting numbers. Anyway, it cut off without finishing the flash and now we can't even pull down his current image or flash him back to his original one. It just says, interface closed and errors out. I tried checking to make sure it wasn't stuck in the programming state but nothing is showing under the ECU drop down menu. I also tried from my laptop to make sure it was car related and not PC/software related. It's definitely something I did to the car. Yes I am taking full responsibility for this.
BTW, his car still runs, and we have turned it off and back on and it's still going. We just can't read/write with ECUFlash anymore.
How do I fix him without buying him a new X!

Man that sucks, I hope someone can come chime in and help you out. The only thing I can think of is to try to bring it to the stealership to have them flash it back to stock. They have factory diagnostic tools that will hopefully be able to access the ecu.
Check battery voltage. I know my buddy's IX MR with the small race battery would never read or write to the ecu due to the battery not holding a charge very well (his car started fine). Just a thought, its easy to check, just hook up the car to a battery charger before attempting to connect with the ecu.

I forgot all about the battery voltage. I was in class late 08 with a toyota/lexus rep teaching us about flashing. He was saying if voltage drops a little more than 1/10 volt when flashing it might lock out the ecu, and use a flashing charger when flashing. In 09 we bought 2 chargers from snap-on with flashing charging (probably wrong terminology) and they mentioned the same thing, but said that was for all makes.
We tried the battery charger with no luck.
So we took his laptop and the cable over to my car and we can still read/write to the ECU. so we are now confident it's related to his ECU. It's just a matter of figuring out the procedure to unlock it so we can work with it again. It says...

Anyways it's definately the ECU. I've heard of this problem before and the user had to send his ECU to colby to get it repaired.
We have no intention of swapping the ECUs. I'm well aware of the built in security methods to prevent users from tampering. They certainly don't want to have someone get in a wreck and have it record air bags going off etc, then have them simply swap the ECU and nobody be the wiser.
We'd love to figure out how to do a hard reset on this thing, but so far I can't find the thread about doing it.
