Still no luck....

Hey guys, unfortunately still no luck on my end. Just recently had my ACD pump replaced (last week)... Old one died on me. But that is not what this thread is about.

As for the grind, I haven't heard it in some time (couple months), but this is common for me. It seems to only really happen in cold weather. With it being summer and extremely hot right now, I do not expect it to happen any time soon. Mitsu Tech line said they will need my vehicle so they can hear the noise themselves. At this point the dealer is pretty much staying out of it, and just doing what Tech line tells them to. I offered up my car to Mitsu for a s long as they would need it, but asked for a rental in return.... Of course they said no. Whatever they can do to make life just that bit more difficult. :-S

Has anyone had any luck with this issue?

I will continue to keep people posted with any updates I have.

Thanks,
Mike

i think it's the intake duct thing opening/closing

SST Grind on Startup-kpvfu7b.png

would happen more when cold cuz the plastic hinge is stiff and kinda sticks for a second then slides and bangs closed, and since it's inside the HVAC ducts it would be really loud echoing through the center dash. You'd hear it under the hood too towards the center because that's where it pulls air from the outside in.

even if you don't have it set to recirculate, it will automatically do it too with the defroster on during start up

you can push and hold the recirc button for 10 seconds to disable it automatically closing and I bet you'll never hear it again

IKT i think ur on the money with this one, ive had alot of evo specialists tell me the same thing. gona try what u said and see if it works.
on another note, this only started happening when my tranny was rebuilt.. also my crank seals were changed which brings me back to dj3po's post which he said, There was air in the line to the crank case. They bled it and no more noise. It's been a week and so far so good.
it just has to be one of these issues. will keep everyone updated

2011 Ralliart

So I have been having the same issue for a while also and had been doing some research as well and had seen most of these videos you guys have put up, and I recently seen the one where this guy gets stranded on the highway so I said screw that and finally decided to take it to the dealer near my location and they gave me some b.s. excuse "in my opinion" about how it could be the torque convertor. Which to me makes no sense sense its not moving when the noise happens. Still under warranty and all but just don't want them wasting my time and there own. any of you guys ever get the problem resolved?

I've had my car for a year and have the same "problem". only does it in the winter although only once so far this winter. had 27,000 when i got it and has 47k now. never had the fluid or anything else changed on it. dealer told me 60k is when you change it. they also said the tranny does a self test or something like that, which i have a hard time believing thats the cause. that is the only problem i have had and doesnt seem to be getting worse, or better. i'm just going to leave it alone, so far so good.

had this problem for god knows how long, i duno what its effecting. i find it hard to believe that no one has come to a fix for this problem. currently my evo is in the work shop because of it. had a brand new box fitted and noise is still apparent. currently the motor is being stripped down and were looking at the crank and crank seals and bearings. putting it all back together soon. noise seems to happen shortly after revs pick up. its cost mitsubishi more in diagnosis and replacing parts then what the actual car is worth. i am lucky that my friend is head service manager

I get the grind at startup more often than I'd like but do notice it's still more prevalent in the winter months. I hope it's not causing major damage. I'm at 29K miles but the car is over 3 years old, so bumper to bumper is gone but the powertain warranty is still good. Is it even worth bringing up at my next visit to the dealer? I feel like if I let them touch it they'll make it worse.

What do you think this is.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2Tom4GMXHGs occasionally grinds on start. Not sure if the starter is sticking or something with the transmission. My dealership is refusing to do anything about the issue without being able to duplicate the sound or having physical damage as proof. To make matters worse, I live 400 miles away from the nearest mitsubishi dealership. The sound only happens on a cold start(not being run for approx 6+ hours). Just wanted someone else's opinion on what the problem may be and what I should do. Thanks,
Myles

Hey everyone, thought I would post back, after some time, with an update. So Mitsu pretty much did nothing for me. The dealer was great in trying to diagnose and work on it, but it got to a point where it went to headquarters and they did dick all. I called and argued with them SEVERAL times. But because they could not duplicate it, they won't do anything.

Some things I have noticed over time trying different things.

  1. it happens more often in the cold (winter)
  2. it happens more frequently when I am parked on a slope or hill with front end up high.
Which we mostly already knew.

One good thing is I think I found a way to NOT have it happen. I find that if I first turn my car on, not start it, but just put it in the on position for about 5 seconds, and then start it, it NEVER happens. It would only happen when I just cranked it on right away, without the pause in between. So I am not sure what happens in between the time from when I turn it "on" and start it. But something MUST be happening that resets or positions something better to prevent it from making that grind. By no means am I a transmisison expert nore can I explain what is happening on a technical level. Just thought I would post my findings and hopefully someone with some technical knowledge can explain it. :-)

Maybe one day Mitsu will get their act together and treat their paying customers as they should be treated.

Cheers!

Mike

When turning mine off I was getting a really harsh forward then backward jerk with a loud clunk. It only happened after driving hard and getting the fluid hot. One day I was tuning the idle to try to smooth the idle out. I raised the idle to around 1000 rpm to get it smooth and the transmission problem has now gone away for good (6 months). My best guess is getting the fluid hot made the pressure too low for the SST to get through its shut down procedure quickly enough before the engine turned off. Raising the idle seems to give it enough pressure to get shut down properly. It is my understanding at shut down it disengages both clutches to prepare for the next start up. Perhaps you are getting this sound because your SST is not getting through shut down properly. If it doesn't work the worst you'll get is a higher idle.

"To change idle, change all Target Idle tabes to the desired value and change all Coolant Vs Idle tables to desired values in the 70 and 80C brackets." -Clipse3GT

Mine is doing the exact same thing, yet it does it at home, but not after I'm parked at work all night...

Shes going into the dealer on Monday for transmission issues, I'm going to be bringing this up. All update if I get anything different than what's already been posted here.

I thought I was the only one! I've had my ralli for 3 years now and have had the same grind on and off for about two years. When I bought the car with 28k they had to replace the trans under warranty. At about 55k started slipping and acting weird and the grind became more persistent. I've been bringing it in for the last 6 months to have them fix it, but they never find anything. Last time they did the tranny fluid flush. Still doing it. So I bring it back losing my mind for having to pay for nothing. This time they tell me a solenoid. I bring it and they tell me they had to flush it again! they had to do a filter on the transfer case 173 just the filter! They also said they had to reprogram the trans because it was set to Evo MR specs not ralliart. 700 bucks! I flipped out and they reduced it to 328. I'm on my third day and so far no grind. This has been a nightmare, hopefully it's over. I'm looking forward to going back to a straight manual trans done with this paddle shifting stuff
