SSP VS Dodson SST Clutch Upgrades
SSP
Stage 1
8 plate
500 ft/lbs
Stage 2
10 plate
600 ft/lbs
Stage 3
12 plate
700 ft/lbs
stage 3+
12 plate with billet aluminum piston seals
700 ft/lbs
Cost from stage 1 - stage 3+: 2300, 2700, 3100, 3300
VS
Dodson
Stage 1
10 plate
450 ft/lbs
Stage 2
10 plates + high tensile alloy clamping plates with high temp seals
500 ft/lbs
Stage 3
10 plates + high tensile alloy clamping plates with high temp seals + billet steel clutch basket
600 ft/lbs
Cost from stage 1 - stage 3: 1725, 2225, 4095
In bold are the differences going from 1 stage to the next. Cost was listed, but irrelevant to what I want to discuss.
What I'm hoping to be discuss here:
Why Dodson's kits do not need more clutch plates.
Why SSP's Stage 3+ is not rated to handle more torque when Dodson's stage 2 does with a similar upgrade compared to previous stage. Are the alloy clamping plates the X factor here?
Billet steel clutch basket? Have those been known to blow up?
What I am NOT interested in:
Fan boy banter, vendor bashing / vendor wars, testimonies, track records.

Its hard to say, im going to be in the same boat with my 14 MR, Might just need to talk to both shops and just ask the questions... Look into John Shepherd @ Sheptrans also hes been building DSM for many many years, stand up guy and very honest

A guy from the FB group told me (He was from texas and had an X that said kozmic on the back, I did not ask if he works there) The beefiers seals, clamps, and clutch basket on the kozmic kit allow for for more clutch clamp force and helps keeps temps under wraps. Which translate into handling higher HP.

I'm busy looking into this as well. Planning a build to take the car to 600whp.
I know the VW DSG community initially used SSP on big turbo builds as SSP was the only option, but when Dodson released their product many started using Dodson instead.
I'm in South Africa and the X was imported in very very limited numbers and thus not really embraced by any tuning market here - so I need to turn to this forum for guidance. We also only got the SST version (I'm assuming its EDM spec).
Will the stage 2 upgrade be sufficient for a 600whp car ?? I'd expect it to make around 450 ft-lbs based on dyno graphs I've looked at.
Setup will be a piston & rod sub-assembly, GSC S2 cams and valvetrain, E85 fuel system and either a GTX3582 or PTE 6062 Gen 2

Kozmic Motorsports has a clutch kit also. They also hold world records with the SST. Kozmic is the one that does work on my car and they do amazing work! You should call them and speak to them. They have a HP10R kit that I'm planning in the future.
