AutoX Mods

So im interested in building an AutoX/Street Evo. Not full blown Autox. I have been thinking about a few options regarding turbos and bottom ends and not exactly clear on which would be best.

Car currently has Bc 272 cams and racing head with supertech dual springs and retainers, +1 oversized valves. And many more parts to come, I previously had a 35r build but had to go back to stock for CA Smog (GAY!).

I also want to see over 450 hp.

Was thinking about:

1) 2.3l with FP black 91 oct/meth

2) 2.0l with FP red 91 oct/meth

3) 2.0l with Fp black 91 oct/meth

Keep in mind that this will probably be a daily driver as well, and that it will see most of its time on streets.

Any help/comments would be great. Thanks.

It seems like you need to decide what you really want to do with the car. If you plan to autox the car, what you really need is a fast spooling turbo like the CBRD BBK or an FP green. You said you want the car to see over 450hp...I am assuming that is at the wheels. Anyway the problem with shooting for a number is that it really doesnt matter especially when you are running a tight course and cant even spool the turbo. Instead you should be trying to build a setup that will give you a broad powerband. Ultimately it should yield a competitive car along with a great street machine.

I would like a fast-ish spooling turbo, do not want a green or bbk tho. I do want to make power, 450 plus with meth and a bottom end/built head shouldnt be a problem for a red or black.

It mostly going to be a street car as it is my DD. But i would like something that is still semi competitive.

And im not sure if the 2.3l red/black or the 2.0l red/black would be the best option.

Only problem is I dont want the red to run outta breath at higher rpms. Will this happen? or is the red pretty good with holding boost till high redline ( 9.5 k )?

Why are you revving that high, just curious.

Thats what i used to rev to with my 35r. But previously i had a regualr green ( with ported built head with cams) and it was not holding boost till redline.. they 35r however did. Im just scared that if i pick up a red it will taper till redline as well..

Im not sure how strict the inspection is at auto x events that you are planning to attend but the last couple events I attended did not allow methanol injection...

If you're planning on building the car for autox, a) you'll hate having a big, slow spooling turbo and b) you'll probably never hit 9.5k rpm. Stock or stock like turbos are best. Work on the driver first before adding gobs of power.

bolded x1000...your title is a bit misleading. it sounds like you just want a car that's fast in a straight line that you'll use for autocross sometimes. if you're building a car FOR autocrossing, and if you want to be fast in autocross, the driver mod is the first and most important thing. Also, you should be looking into suspension, and wheel/tire mods as those are also very very important.

I hear my friends say all the time, "oh i'll autocross after i do this, or add this, or mod this, or get that...etc" and what I tell them is that all the mods in the world won't do you any good if you can't use them to their full potential. most people can't even reach the limits of their cars in bone stock form, so until you can, there's no reason to raise those limits. the best thing to do is race the car the way it sits, and then when you feel that your limits have exceeded those of the car, THEN mod the car in the areas you think it needs to help you go faster. You'll get a lot more out of the car, and yourself that way.

another thing to note is that while power is cool and all, big power doesn't win autocrosses on most courses. handling and driver ability are the most important things. you can go a lot faster around the course by modding those two things than you can by modding for power.

example: at the last autocross I ran, the fastest car at the event was a nationally prepped 1988 Civic Si hatchback with a MAYBE 150whp, but it was light and very well setup with a very skilled driver. He handed a modded C6 Z06 Vette (roughly 500whp), which also had a highly skilled driver, it's ***. Both cars were on race rubber, and the little Civic pretty much murdered everything out there.

good luck with the build.
