Tanner Foust Announces Temporary Retirement From Formula DRIFT

Foust has announced his temporary retirement from drifting due to a demanding 2011 schedule of European Rally events.
February 15, 2011

Long Beach, Calif. - February 10th, 2011 - Formula DRIFT has announced that 2-time Formula DRIFT champion, Tanner Foust will temporarily step away from the sport of drifting. In conjunction, Papadakis Racing and Team Need For Speed have announced the signing of the 2010 Formula DRIFT Rookie of the Year, Fredric Aasbo.
"Tanner's semi-retirement is bittersweet for the Series as he has become one of the most recognizable drivers on the circuit and is one of the most competitive spokesmen for Formula DRIFT," said Jim Liaw, president and co-founder of Formula DRIFT. "As with the growth and progression of the Series we can expect to see opportunities brought to many of the drivers and wish Tanner more success in his career both on and off the track. His departure will leave a spot open for a future star of drifting to rise, which we are excited to see."

Foust has announced his temporary retirement from drifting due to a demanding 2011 schedule of European Rally events, X-Games and television responsibilities. The 2-time Formula DRIFT champion and Tires.com Triple Crown bonus winner will be competing one last time in the Rockstar / Papadakis Racing Scion tC on February 25, 2010 during the Formula DRIFT UAE Invitational competition.

"I owe a lot to Formula DRIFT and Stephan Papadakis. This sport, Stephan and his team have been, and will remain, an integral part of my motorsports life," said Tanner Foust, from his home in San Juan Capistrano. "This was a hard choice to make, but with my schedule looking even busier than last year's I will not be able to fully commit to the 2011 Formula DRIFT season. However, I am looking forward to competing in the Rockstar Scion tC for one last time in Abu Dhabi this month." With an open seat, team owner, Stephan Papadakis has enlisted the highly touted and talented driver, Fredric Aasbo. In addition, a newly created partnership with Team Need For Speed has solidified the alliance. Aasbo will be competing in the brand new Need for 2011 Scion tC this season with the competition debut during Round 1: Streets of Long Beach on April 8-9, 2011.

"Our new partnership with Need For Speed and having Fredric behind the wheel of the new Need for Speed 2011 Scion tC is very exciting," stated Stephan Papadakis, team owner of Papadakis Racing. "To be aligned with such a top brand in the gaming world is a dream of ours. The synergy between our programs is a natural fit. We build crazy cars for competition and they have the technology for the world to drive them! It has been a pleasure to work with Tanner for the past 5 years and our team thanks him for his hard work and determination and wish him nothing but the best."

The 2011 Formula DRIFT season begins on April 8-9, 2011 and will mark the debut of many cars, drivers, and teams. For more information visit: www.formuladrift.com

Yeah, I heard about that on Twitter. I'm not much for Drift; just seems insanely expensive in terms of tire usage - but that guy has some Drift skills to be sure!

Maybe Foust will come back from retirement and do some 4 wheel drifting like block in an evo.

well ... you need to do one rally event only, and you are doomed for rest of your life. Proven and prove time to time

Untill you dont do rally at least once , you dont know what you missing.
I dont even mention if you even have an Evo or Subi...

Maybe a little known fact...maybe not.

Back when Tanner was driving a rally car, way back before the Rockstar Days, he drove a Subaru for a Colorado Dealership in the Rally America PGT class. Anybody want to guess what his DD was? .............an Evo.

I've spoken with several guys who've rallied and "moved on" to other motorsports, and Robevo's right...once you've rallied, you're likely hooked for life and do whatever it takes to get back into the woods with a fast car.

I am still looking for a Group 2 or Production class car if anyone knows of a good starter car. Thought I would throw that out there with all the rally guys in one thread.

Stay away from production class cars. Often times you'll end up with something less reliable b/c you have to stick with stock components.

My recommendation is to keep an eye out on the specialstage.com classifieds. I do know of a guy in Colorado selling a pretty competitive VW Golf, but its not going all that cheap. How much are you looking to spend on a car? Looking for a project, or something that's ready to hit the stages?

Looking for a car thats ready for stage rally. I am looking for most affordable car i can find under $4000. If I could find one with work needed cheaper that might interest me as well. I have been watching on there as well as rally classifieds. My mechanic/fabricator is well versed in rally so I have the means to get a car back to speed.

the problem is you can and will find a car for that price, but make sure you dont buy a trouble.
Only thing is worth usually on those cars are tha body shell with a cage . BUT make sure those componenets are in good shape and will pass all inspections.

Everything else you will and can be change, but those two is one of the most cruical parts at that price range. Dont be fooled with the engine or transmission stories etc.

Rob

VW Golf is your best bet or a civic. But i would get an Subi RS , for further updates in mind

I didn't think they will let me drive an AWD car like a subi. VW is pretty much what I'm lookin for. I dont even need a competitive car, i am just looking to log some hours and have fun with "my first rally car" Thanks for the advice.

the RS is FWD NA car. Great for start, and you can upgrade it later i think even for AWD + turbo charged car for open class... So you dont need to buy a shell and other body parts twice You need to upgrade the engine and the drive train only as you progress....
Also the Subi parts are cheap and you can find them left and right.
