Roll Cage in Street Modified
Roll Cage in Street Modified
So i know SCCA supports safety, and roll cages are permitted. But I want to get a 6 point cage for drag racing, and remain legal for SM. With a good 6pt, I'm imagining the dash bar will be removed and integrated in to the cage. Or, I'm wrong, and a 6 point has bars from the main hoop (not having a roof hoop at all), going down to the floor up front.
I'm thinking that modifying/replacing the dash bar is not really legal in SM, but maybe there is a caveat for roll cages I don't know about.
Appreciate the help fellas...

Im gunna venture a guess and say that itll automatically throw you into a prepared class. My speculation probably isnt helpful but Im confident someone else will chime in shortly.
You can have up to a 6 or 8 point (I forget which it is). There are also limits to what you can attach to. Best to real the rule book though, I haven't paid too much attention since Its never been a concern to me.
A cage CAN replace the dash bar, but doesn't have to. I'm pretty sure you could do a full cage and stay in SM if done correctly. I don't think a 6-point rollbar setup for drag racing would be a problem at all.
Cutting the dash for the drop bars on a cage might be an issue though and you can't go around the dash for NHRA.
Watch out for material though. For auto-X, chromoly I think is fine, but I don't think you can go thinner with chromoly for road racing.

Chromoly is really a waste of $$$ with the rule changes. You used to be able to run thinner wall thickness with chromoly which is where the weight savings in a chromoly cage came from. Now they require the same thickness for chromoly. So there isn't weight savings anymore and hence its pretty much bling factor anymore.
was that thickness change real recent? I hadn't heard anything about that.
I will have to dig into the dreaded rulebook again, i guess. I was going to tie the rear bars into the strut tower...

that didn't take long... well, i'm ****ed out of competing legally in SM now. roll bars may be welded in to the car, and roll cages (only a cage by definition would be certified for drag times I need) can only be bolted in. So, i build a NHRA cage to their specs that isn't allowed in SOLO, or a build a SOLO allowed rollbar or cage that can't be certified for NHRA.
Right now i can't comprehend the no welding rule for cages, since you can weld a roll bar. Only difference is the cage would have front supports, and rollbar is just a 4 point.
