so 265/35-18 RE71Rs are 27 lbs each. 255/40-17 RE71Rs are 24 lbs each.

I go from a 16.4lb wheels to likely 20lb wheels. Let's say 4 lbs per corner.

7lbs per corner, total 28lbs of increased rotational unsprung mass. same width wheel, shorter sidewall and 10mm more of tire. someone hush me and tell me it's still worth it.

I don't plan to go to 18s unless I'm going with a 275 or larger tire. In that case, I'd swap out brake calipers. My end game is to, eventually, have 275s+ and X calipers.
Going with a larger/heavier wheel/tire to run a larger caliper... I just don't know. I have a feeling ducting, pistons, and maybe shims will work for me until I go bigger.

thought so too, but meathooker & hondaguy convinced me with their shining reviews of the braking performance.

When you move to stickier tires, you will brake harder because there's more available grip. Then you will feel the short coming of the stock brakes.

on my "street" evo i ran 17x10 rpf1 with a 275 hoosier tire. it was stupid light and i swore i would never go away from that setup.

now we run 18x10.5 and wouldn't go back.

if you are just racing autox then stick with 17's .... anything else the braking (IMO) is worth the weight penalty.

I've never run more than a 255 Nitto/Hankook so that's probably why I'm still on the fence. I did pretty much assume more rubber will = OEM braking limits, though.
Gonna be an expensive upgrade

Sorry if I have missed it, but are the piston sizes the same between IX and X calipers?

And probably STi, if you are looking for in-stock replacement parts. I think they show the same part number for Subaru/Mitsu.
