Best way to rent a tow vehicle & a car trailer?

I was (ok, still am) supposed to codrive a SSC car at the upcoming solo nationals. I drove the said car for the first time last Sunday, and..... really did not like it .

Which makes me think seriously about just running mine in BS instead. However, I have taken great care to keep the miles down throughout my ownership and there is no way I will be putting 2600 miles on it for 6 minutes of run time, nationals or not.

So I've been looking for a way to rent a tow vehicle and a trailer. I've looked into renting both from U-haul, which was $$$$$ since they charge by mile. The cheapest method I've found so far is renting a truck from Enterprise Trucks (local branch has unlimited miles and also allows towing) and just the trailer from U-haul, which comes out to around $800 total.

Anyone has better ideas? Local members have suggested renting a Tacoma / Tundra through the Toyota Rent a Car program and also Turo but none of the Toyota dealers around me seem to allow towing and I don't feel comfortable with Turo.

I would just ship the car, and fly out. Most rental companies only allow a certain mileage per day, so cross country towing will definitely put you over that...

I've seen people towing across country with rentals, so I know they allow it.. but usually one way (moving). I'm Not sure they will care that you doing a return trip, or not. That was all U-haul, though. I'm not sure how a car rental company does things. You may want to clarify with Enterprise. It could be an expensive mistake if you misunderstand their policy.
Most people that I know either own/borrow a truck and rent the trailer. Renting both is a lot tougher, it sounds.

By "allow" I meant included in the daily rate. They charge you more if you go over the set amount.

Don't think $800 is terrible to save 2500 miles. Plus new trucks are soooo comfortable lol. I personally and 5'5" so I actually sleep in the cab of my truck comfortably. There is a couple $$$ saves for me when I go for track weekends

I dunno. Does an Evo depreciate $800 after 2600 miles? Not like were driving Ferraris.
😂
Drive the car there ,stash the $800 in savings & apply it towards the car when you sell it, if you're that concerned. You can also add the money you'll save in gas. LOL
In all seriousness I'd tow, also. My car is really loud and I don't trust my transmission.

$800 is cheap. i wouldn't rent my truck and trailer out for that little.

towing to races gives a big piece of mind you'll get home.

Ooooor come drive SSC, save the wear/tear/cost on the Evo. Is it more challenging to drive? Yes. It's a long way to drive in a car that more than likely won't be competitive in BS at the National scene, IMHO. I'll be there in the 87 SSC FRS, come say "Hi!"

Save the mileage you put on the car for fun driving. 800miles of just cruising is a waste of consumables/wear IMO. Plus the evo is not a very comfortable car for road trips, especially without cruise control.

You know. ... you can get a 2000-2003ish Suburban or Tahoe for sometimes less than $2,000. Then just rent a trailer. Boom. Problem solved forever.

This is sort of what I ended up doing since renting options were very few/limited (not to mention expensive). I went a 03 Silverado ( truck tax = more expensive then SUV ) and my own brand new trailer from Econo-Trailer. Worked out great for towing the Evo to the DSM/Evo Shootout, and will be even more useful since next year I have a 2,000 mile round trip going from Miami to Ohio.

Truck rentals from Enterprise were around $2k + with miles being accounted for ( no unlimited miles plan ). Uhaul I'd imagine would be roughly about the same.

Yup. I came to the same conclusion, after doing the math. It's gonna be sad to have an SUV in front of my house, just sitting for 350 days per year...but it's easier & cheaper than renting.
