Very disappointed in my latest build (1/4 Mile Related)

All:

I blew my motor last year and took the opportunity to make a new more powerful build. Over the course of several months, I ended up with the following mods: FPRed Turbo, E85, built motor, FMIC along with all the piping. It made 606awhp/550awtq on the dyno at 34psi. I was very happy with the results until I took the car to the track. To my surprise, my car is actually slower than when I had it at 360whp/400wtq on stock turbo. When racing down the track and going through the gears for the first time (not to mention even driving a car with that much power), I realize that I'm in a bad situation. The boost doesn't spool up to maximum until well beyond 6k rpm. I was constantly waiting for the car to spool up during each gear before I could get down the track. It was horrible going from one gear to the next. I called KevinD at Evolution Dynamics for some pointers. He told me to switch faster. Fine. I go out and try to redline the car and switch really fast. That presented another problem.. the syncros locked me out of switching gears at high revs. I have had no work to the transmission, but all of this build would be useless until I am able to keep the turbo in the power band and get continuous pull through each gear.

What should I do? Has anyone else had this problem before? How do the really fast EVO with big turbos stay in the powerband?

Yeah, maybe the RED (at your pwr level) is not well suited for road course work? Quicker spooling turbo like a GREEN, at a lower WHP maybe needed? (just a thought)

Hey, moved your thread to the board where most of our experienced track guys hang

You should have full boost by 4500rpm. Something isn't right. The red makes a great track turbo. I had it on my stock engine with GSC S2 cams, it was an excellent combo.

Do you have the dyno sheet handy? A red should def be at full boost mid 4k range or less. Sorting out the lag or high boost threshold would be my #1 priority there.

I have the dyno sheet. I'm not tracking the car. Just drag racing it.

That looks like a good curve from the red. 450wtq at 4500. You should have no problem shifting that at 7500rpm and going fast.

Power does seem to fall off up top more than it should though.

I swear it seems like the car doesn't haul *** until 6k rpms. Look at the boost curve. It's max is at 34psi @ 6k. I wonder if that's what I'm feeling?

I don't think I've ever seen a red die off up top like that. Does your tuner say why it it's happening? Either way, it seems like after you shift, you should be in the meat of your power band. Curious.

That or wastegate preload needs to be cranked up. What actuator are you using?

It sounds like you're drag racing. Turn on NLS in the tune and you won't fall out of boost as bad or at all.

My old DSM days NLTS was great. RPM dropped to a perfect range and shifts loved it. There was also a surge of power when clutch came out instead of a lul while the turbo spooled.

Do you have any datalogs? Seeing RPM, boost pressure, and TPS down a 1/4-mile run would be helpful. A 3rd-gear rolling pull with tip-in at 5K RPM would help show the transient response.

for the RPM lock out issue, try adjusting the clutch pedal rod so that it sinks into the firewall more when you press the clutch. It may not be fully disengaging. Who built your motor?

I just took it for a spin when I got home.

I was able to move from 2nd to 3rd and noticed that it drops from 8k to 6k and the delay is very short this time. However, going from 1st to 2nd gear is still very rough. The drivetrain is shaking so bad, that I miss 2nd gear with a grind. I asked Kevin how this could be alleviated. I've always had problems shifting into 2nd gear from first. The gearbox is very very notchy and has been for years. But with this new power it's exaggerated now.
