New AP Radi-CAL confirmed for Evo 8-9!

Hi guys,

Thought this was worth starting a new thread since many of us have been discusssing new brake systems the last couple years.

I confirmed the AP Radi-CAL competition brake kit will be available for the EVO VIII-IX in about 6 weeks.

“The discs in both of our kits will be the same 372x34mm units. There are two caliper options. One uses an 18mm thick pad (CP9660), the other a 25mm thick pad (CP9668). The 9668 weighs about half a pound more, and sticks out roughly 14mm further towards the wheel spokes.”

Designed to be used with OEM rear brakes. Will require 18” rims. This system has a lot of great reviews from race teams. Cool option to consider for those in the market to upgrade your brake system with the latest tech.

Here is the link to the kit.

That AP Radi frame is certainly stout (you can tell by the upper built-in bridge)

This AP kit (4 Pot) looks to be in the same category as this Wilwood pkg

For me, the Wilwood set up would be more than I would need (Fronts $1800 Rear $1500)

Its possible to kill two birds with one stone. Buy this new kit and put your old kit in the rear. If everything fits you would just need new mounting brackets for the calipers to bolt to the rear hubs.

Love my AP 8350's, but after recent power and handling upgrades.....I need next level. As always, my 17" rim limitations have me scouring the internet. Probably easier to just get 18's and pop these new AP Radi-Cals on. It's funny, looking at 355mm rotors is like reading mid 1990's super car threads. Like my EVO, it's getting old in the teeth. But my tuner/suspension guy says 17's=less rotating mass=faster laps......

Well it's not just the bracket but rotor hat's and a rotor to match it, which requires them to make as well. Then do they make it to fit all the streeties out there with parking brakes still. Then the brake lines. Then the piston size needs reduced massively to mate to whatever brake force x pressure is in the fronts. All machined parts with engineering effort$. The Euro's have a rear AP kit already so we'll see what the options are again.

I'd raise an eyebrow at that suspension tuner, there's (many) reasons over 90% of the real race cars in real race series are using 18's and it's not because they can gain lap times with 17's. Run the tires and brakes you need to be successful and Finish. Find time elsewhere.

18" are used because there is greater tire choice and you can stuff larger brakes inside the wheels... even on rally the 18" were homologated and used on tarmac.

My 17x9.5 setup is definitely lighter than my 18x10 setup. The two setups have very different outer diameters, so I can't make a direct comparison. The heavier 18x10 setup feels like it might take a fraction of a second longer to recover when I hit seems and square-edge bumps on our bumpiest autocross courses, but the difference is so small that I might just be imagining it.

On the other hand, I just built a new mountain bike with light tires and carbon fiber wheels. The carbon fiber wheels accelerate noticeably faster from a stop compared to my other bike with overbuilt aluminum rims. Wheels make up a much larger fraction of a bike's total weight and a car, though.

17" wheels would be great if you can make them work, but I wouldn't go so far as to compromise braking performance or tire choice just to stick to 17" rims.

Move the 8350's to the rear?

You can fit the AP Pro 5000 caliper and a 355 rotor under most 17" wheels.

Ive had these calipers and a 355 rotor for a year now. great setup. Bit strange u mention the kit is only just being released in 6 weeks since theyve been around for a while. unless its cause you want to buy an off the shelf kit and not make ur own hats and dog bones i guess.
