The oil pan doesn't touch the down pipe. I can hold my hand next to the down pipe with the car running and don't feel much heat.

An air gap and some air flow do a lot more than you probably think. And the DP/oil pan area have both.
Does anyone get data for 99% of the stuff they do for their cars?
It was free, so I did it because it could only help and, at worst, not hurt anything.

At full tilt, I'm sure it's warmer. I can maybe get a finger between the dp and pan. Maaaybe

Gotta consider radiant heat. And at WOT for extended periods its gonna get hot. Even wrap does a good enough job and basically stops radiant heat. That plus some gold tape and im sure its no longer an issue.

That's what I had before. I swapped pans at the same time, so hard to say how much of a contribution it made to controlling temp. All I know is it was down, so I've stuck some form of blocking heat to the pan, ever since.

Radiant heat is non-existent with airflow...

Kyoo made a very bold statement that "every CT9a should have this done" yet he has no data to support it and plenty of cars without it (including mine) run around without oil temp issues.

Got my spare pan in the mail yesterday
Is there still interest in getting a group buy set up?

How long was the turnaround time on the last group buy?

Sourcing a spare pan is going to be somewhat difficult. If I had to use my current pan I'd be okay with a couple months of downtime in the winter, but not during the summer season.

Rob seems really fast (not sure if this is their low season?) for turn around. He turned my pan around in a few days. Shipping took most of the time.

I was recently reminded about the issues KAJ's fabricator had with old oil pans...
I am overhauling friends E9 and the sump was usually rusty..

So I cut it out and decided to do a 1 litre larger oil sump with a simple baffle... this is not track car... rather a fast road car on stock sized tires..

Now, the issue is wleding, especially if you do not cut off the whole bottom half of the pan. The pan is made of two sheets of steel, probably zinc plated, and it is real easy to burn trough it and it doesnt like to weld. This is especially evident on the bottom section that has the most rust and oil contamination... even after cleaning.
So I made the new section and welded that with TIG but to attach it to the old part of the pan I used TIG brazing technique and it worked a treat..

Simple baffle that controls the oil movement under braking and nicely leads oil back to the pickup in right hand corners..

I've had people that didn't get one of my pans complain about it being brazed. All these years and mine is doing just fine.
About a year ago, I had an accident where the weight of the engine was on the pan for a bit. Still good.
Yours should did juuuust fine.
And yeah. ....all those horror stories sound all too familiar.

I cant imagine people complaining about brazing... Hell, Caterham uses brazing in their chassis construction and that is a critical part...

It was only a couple people. But you know how we all are : always trying to build a better mouse trap.
