Tow Rigs, What do you have/use?

I'm in the market for a good tow rig. Something that gets 35mpg and can tow my evo would be great!

Would a Honda Fit pull 5000lbs you think????

ok for cereal...

I've been hearing some guys getting high teen mpg with the early 2000 dodge 2wd diesels with an open flatbed trailer.

Anyone have any input? What are you using? Gas mileage? Ease of towing? Please share.

If you've got the $; I'd look at the new F-150 EcoBoost. 22mpg highway and 420ft-lbs with towing near 11,000 lbs I think.

I've got a Titan which pulls my open trailer with ease. Only gets about 11-12mpg towing in 4th though.

I bought a CPO'd '06 Cayenne S V8 that pulls 7,500 and you won't even know you have anything back there...

I get around 12-15 mpg (depending on terrain)

You can get a CPO'd '08 Cayenne S in the low 40's if you're looking for more of a "dual-purpose" solution

Looking for a truck to pull my evo about 5 times a year and only on 500miles each (round)trip.

I'm also they type of guy that would prefer to spend more of my money on tires and track time vs a big new truck.

I'm not ball'n enough for a CayenneS. I did look at some X5's though. but practicality hit and i dont want something that has a high cost of ownership.

A car with a small engine will not neceserely get better gas mileage then a truck when towing something heavy. In an under powered car you will be on the gas constantly. It is probably a little dangerous when the car you are towing with weighs a lot less then what you towing. A diesel will get you the best gas mileage. I would look for an older diesel truck. Check out Copart.com for a trailer. Sometimes cheap ones pop up.

I bought a 2002 Chevy 1500HD 2wd. Picked it up with 82,000miles for $6,500. The price is low because it was a theft recovery. Nothing was wrong except the ignition had to be replaced because it had a screw driver jammed in it. Haha. I get between 8.5-10.5 mpg depending on terrain. It pulls like a champ with the 6.0L motor. I picked up the trailer for $1,000 from a friend.

(picture note: I know the car is a little forward on the trailer. I moved it back a bit before I towed the car)

^ that sounds like something for me. $7500 into a tow rig.

I'd love to have something like an escalade with a featherlite, but who the F would spend that kind of ching???

ExtremeDSM Mar 8, 2012 10:07 AM

^Me. :D I just picked up a Cadillac Escalade EXT. Love it so far. Has plenty of power and looks great. I also have the 18" Featherlite trailer. Should have bought one of those years ago.

I knew we had a moron here. ok maybe I'm just a little jealous.

Atleast I am a moron with a comfortable truck and nice trailer that does not weigh as much as the car on it. :D

2011 silverado 4 door duramax diesel. Got a 6 inch exhaust. PPE tuner, intake, twin CP3 pumps, a few other things. 990 ft lbs of torque. Doesnt flinch pulling a 30ft enclosed trailer.

ExtremeDSM Mar 8, 2012 10:32 AM

^Nice. That is probably faster than most cars on the road with a trailer hooked up to it. :)

Not mine nor is it a tow rig, but I just read this article on Moto IQ about using a box truck for this purpose. Pretty cool idea.
