Finally installed my SSB rear trailing arms
 

I don't know why I put this off so long. Had I not taken my sweet time throughout the process, I bet I could have been done in about 30mins. I decided to have fun test fitting my wheels, though they have the wrong tire (305 NT01). I figured I can still get an idea of how my 275 NT01s will fit. I now know I will have plen-ty of room.
Details
1. SSB rear trailing arms. https://www.ssb-designs.com/
2. Took minutes to install. Seriously. So easy and can be done with basic hand tools and a torque wrench.
3. Wheels are 18x10.5 +38 PF01s.
4. I'm seriously bummed they are black. Now I'm part of the played-out-black-wheel-color gang :lol:
5. Tested with 305 NT01
6. Will be running 275 NT01
7. New tires will have plenty of room.
8. 20mm spacer up front to clear coilovers, waiting to test fit new tires to see how small I can get away with.
9. Front and rear have 8" springs. The 305 would fit up front with a 6" spring. Maaaaybe a 7".
10. I believe I am running 2.0* of camber in the rear, which is my goal. I don't think I can run any more without adding a spacer.

Some things I noticed while swapping/fitting:
1. Apparently my 255 NT01s on a 9.5 +38 wheel was taking a bit of plastic off the rear bumper cover. It happened about 1/4" below where the bolt is that some people relocate. I was surprised and didn't expect it. I'm prepared to do a bumper bolt relocation, if I need to.
2. I'm also gonna space out the bottom bolt on the bumper cover (like we do the front fenders) to keep from kicking up so much crap onto the cover. It looks super easy to do. I think I've seen someone here do the same?
3. I'm also prepared to add the front fender mod, then space out the bottom of the fender and whatever else I need in order to get as much front tire coverage as I need.
4. Rear fender lips have been bent and hammered about as flat as I can get them then touched up with paint (too lazy/didn't care enough to use a heat gun). I'm waiting to mount the wheels to see how much I need to pull.
5. The rear wheels barely... and I mean barely clear my spring perches. i'd say about 3mm of room. I don't foresee any flex there.. but have a set of 3mm spacers, just in case. I'm really, really hoping not to need them.
6. Front tires rubbed the hell out of the perches up front. expected. The wheel was nowhere anything and the tire actually fit when I added another 5mm spacer.

I think that is about it. It sure was fun playing cars. Tires come in Wednesday and I just hope I can get everything fitting perfectly by next Sat for an event at the Buttonwillow kart track.

Thanks, Dallas, for doing this for us! I've been waiting a long, long time for a trailing arm to work with wider wheels!

Rear was hitting because the wheel was pivoted a bit, due to the front of the wheel hitting the OEM trailing arm. Luckily, this went away.

One of these days Dallas is gonna pick a color and stick with it lol ;) Weight differences? I assume these weigh slightly less then my OG RT arms.

One a side note, how do you like the Jax? I went with the quickjacks but kinda wished I'd done this instead.

So in the rear with trailing arms, may I please clarify with you:

On PF01 18x10.5 +38, you fitted NT01s and they cleared strut and everything else? The bumper bolt and anything else?
On outside you thought the rear quarter panel is a bit in the way?
Did you try to compress the wheel to see how much pulling may be required?
What camber do you have in the rear?


Seems that in the front with 25mm spacer you were able to clear strut and still be somewhat able to cover the wheels/tires with OEM fender- maybe should be spaced out.

With RS Motors guys running 315s on NT03+M 18x10.5 +30 (I think) - under stock body - there has to be method to the madness.

Out of curiosity I checked NT01 305s, and it seems 315's are nicer fit for Evo, due to closer-to-OEM diameter.
The 305s are really really big diameter, which may hinder fit.

Falken FK651 Azenis is also available in 315, with same basic diameter and thread width:

315 tires offer huge thread width, 12.6". Diameter of 25.5" is somewhat reasonable.

Dallas is a live saver and allows us to go above and beyond what these cars should be able to do on a Grassroots level. I'm very grateful to have that guy around. {thumbup}

Not sure on weight difference. I'm not sure I ever held both at once, to tell the truth :crap: The lift was the one of the BEST investments I've made. My car fits perfectly between my ceiling joists with it up to max height. For anyone with limited head space, it's a sweet setup. Being able to sit under the car to work is sooooo much better than having to lay under it with parts in my face :lol: I can even clean OPR from the sideskirts and bumper while standing. LOL. It's the way to go, if you are limited by ceiling/joist height.

I haven't tested under compression, etc. because these are the wrong tires, as mentioned above. These tires came on the wheels, I just haven't had them dismounted yet.
From all I've read these tires would need the bumper bolt moved and all kinds of other stuff. I believe they are almost 26.5" tall. That's just nuts and impractical.
I currently have 2* of camber in the rear.
I'm surprised by the fitment in front. I expected the tire to stick out much farther. I'm at 3* camber, FWIW. I think a shorter spring and less spacer would tuck them in nicely. I expect zero issues, when I put the 275s on.
Not sure how RS is doing it.. but with the right combination of springs, camber, spacers, and adjustments of body parts... it's possible. Not sure if it's worth it, but they obviously think it is.

305 is a horrible tire for the Evo, IMO. It's hard to fit the width AND height. It takes a lot of work to fit. I'm not that hard core. Yet :lol: I won't touch 651s or R888Rs, so those are a non-issue for me.
I have been watching Dallas fit 315s. That's also more work than I wanna do right now :lol: But.. if I'm gonna go that extreme, I'd definitely go the 315 vs the 305 route. I think, by the time you are done, it will be a better fitting/functioning setup and easier to fix.

The RS guys can fit the 315 because they have a $3k Wisefab rear kit which allows them to narrow the track width and pull the wheels in and they trimmed some inboard metal for clearance.

Last I checked Dallas will have no issues fitting 315s. The measures that he's taking right now are for 335s that he's looking to run in the future. Also, keep in mind Dallas' car is a good bit lower than ours so he will have a tougher time fitting tires.

Later this year I'll be getting my spare 295s mounted and test fit. Next winter I'll be looking to fit 315s, not expecting to do a whole ton more work than what I already have done.

RS went through such extremes. They shoulda just called Dallas :lol: I'm glad to see him going so wide on the tires. It means I'll never have trouble getting mine to fit. I'm stoked there are so many peeps on this board I can learn from and follow/copy. I don't think I could ever make use of anything in the 3XX range, but good to know I could.

I don't understand how much can the Wisefab tighten rear track, considering rear axles are OEM, so ..may have 5mm per side "CV joint compression available" but not much more...

How do they tighten track?

@alpinaturbo Heres a nice pic of the rear assy. Their notes dont show anything about track adj. We certainly know the RS guys needed this susp to fit the +300 series tires (as they noted)

I can't imagine a 315 fitting on a stock rear quarter panel and not hitting the shock.

I wonder how much that will rub. My rear quarters are displeased with my 17x9s on 245s x.x
Do you have your rear quarters rolled or anything?

Wisefab offers an adjustable length upper control arms which means the track width can be adjusted. As to how much maybe 1/2" on each side. They don't advertise it because it's not the intention of the kit.

As for clearing the shock in the rear that depends on a lot of factors but if Dallas is clearing with his 18x12 +32 on flags (known for having terrible shock clearance up front and back) we should be just fine with our meager 10.5 setups.

He's also mexipoking until he gets flares. If I cut my fenders, I could also make stuff fit easy peasy.
I'm trying to do things without taking that step.

That's more a function of the wheels, not the tires. You can fit 315 under factory metal, it's just not easy by any means.
