Attention all Mass-holes

I'm sure many, if not all, of you are aware of the exhaust regulations in our "fair" state. I am currently stock and plan to stay stock, but exhausts don't last forever, and I can see a little bit of corrosion happening already. So when the time comes to replace my Evo 8 stock muffler, what do you recommend? Keep in mind I'm not going to be doing any performance mods so I don't want a $1000 siq JDM exhaust. It would have to be quiet if it was aftermarket and I'm obviously not going to pay an arm and a leg at the dealer and idk what Midas would slap on my car.

I guess my question is: Are there any good exhausts out there that are about the stock volume? What are YOU guys running and what do you think of it? How many times pulled over for it/fix it tickets/etc? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Greddy Evo2. Quiet with a slight growl. Great fitment. May not net much extra HP but you said that didn't matter to you anyway. I might replace mine for something with more power potential when I have the $$$ to make more power.

Never been pulled over for exhaust. (Knock on wood). State inspector had no problem with it either when I had to change my registration from PA to MA.

Nice, that sounds like what I'm looking for. My friend's dad has a shop so I can get "inspected" there. I think I'm gonna hang on to my stock exhaust when I replace it in case I do get pulled over. I'm on NASIOC a lot and they have that problem and the easiest thing to do is put the stock back on for inspection and then swap back and repeat as necessary.

Alright, Greddy Evo2. Thanks for the input! Anyone else?

No, this isn't OT because this is the root of my exhaust dilemma. It has been covered ad-nauseum in new england subaru impreza club so I have quite a bit of experience on this. The statute is 90-16 if you want to look it up and it's very vague(what law isn't). It is translated as saying any exhaust system that alters the sound/tone of the stock exhaust is illegal, which in turn, makes all aftermarket systems illegal. They are taking it a step further and have a bill that would ban the PURCHASE and INSTALLATION of aftermarket exhausts. But as for now, you can be pulled over for having an aftermarket exhaust, which is why it's best to keep the stocker because once you get that ticket, you have to be re-inspected and you won't pass with that same exhaust on there. It comes down to officer's discretion. Some will pull you over for it, some won't. It doesn't matter how much louder it is from stock. It's not a db level that's a cutoff making some aftermarkets legal and some illegal. It's a blanket restriction which is part of what is keeping me from wanting an exhaust.

To sum up: I will need a new muffler at some point in the car's life. I don't want to pay a gillion dollars at the dealer and don't want whatever Midas will give me ha. That leaves getting a quiet aftermarket system, though they are still technically illegal. So far the Greddy Evo2 sounds like a good choice.

Pick up anther stocker in the FS sections. Usually the first thing a kid will do when his/her parents buy them an Evo is strap a shiny new fart can on it.

The cops will pull you over for ANY aftermarket exhast. They even occasionaly pull me over to try and tell me my stock exhast is in violation.

I guess if you're a fine upstanding citizen and you want to risk it, you can prolly get away with it, but in the off chance of attracting attention whilst ridin' dirty I don't want the hassel.

Exactly why the law exists. Except instead of setting a db level that's a threshold, they put a zero-tolerance/zero-thinking blanket ban.

Yep, crappy coffee can made at home or $1000 JDM exhaust, cops don't care. Yea, I've heard of STIs getting pulled over for stock exhausts too.

Exactly why I'm stock. I don't want to go aftermarket because it's not worth the trouble to me, but my muffler won't last forever. What to replace it with is the question...

oooo gotcha. thats pretty much what i heard but i guess i just looked at it like some exhaust would sound stock which really isnt the case if you thin about it lol. i think the only car that COULD get away with it is an srt cause i know some that have absolutly NO exhaust note, WAYYYY less then factory cause they add a muffler with single tip..... would that be considered illegal as well? cause i did get a ticket for stock exhaust when i had an srt....

here's what you do: get exhaust system of your choice.

before you install your aftermarket exhaust, take multiple pictures of the stocker - measuring the tip diameter, etc. Also save your window sticker saying you have a 4" Tip on the car's stock muffler. Then, take your car into Mitsu, have them put it up on a lift and make them give you a workorder saying the exhaust on the car is stock, 100% functional with no leaks.

THEN, install your aftermarket exhaust.

If you're ever hassled by cops, you fight the ticket and bring in your documentation and get off scot free.

Don't ask me how I know this. Oh, and it probably isn't a good idea to take your car to court that day

Why dont we all pitch in and buy a condo in Florida, we can all register our cars there and each take a week to vacation there.

I got pulled over a few months ago because the state trooper thought my stock exhaust was aftermarket. He let me go after I kept reiterating that the exhaust was stock and nothing had been replaced. I'll also be looking for a relatively quiet aftermarket system.

they asked if my Helix was stock, and I said it was. Couple of the "car experts" there substantiated my claim by saying "Yo man, that's the EH-VO, it comes like that from the factory."

They asked where my silencer was with the Mitsu symbol and part numbers on it. I said I left it at home

Idiot grease monkeys FTW!
