There are other reasons as well (hauling something, thinking there may be issues up ahead, thinking something may be wrong and trying to listen for the issue, testing, etc). There are dozens of reasons someone could not be going the speed limit.
There is never a reason IMO to go slower than the speed limit in the left lane! Also as far as I know there are already laws for going too slow, specifically related to impeding traffic. If you are going 5 under for any of those reasons, stay in the farthest part of the far right lane. If you are going 10 under, same thing applies and maybe put your fuggin' hazards on. If you're going slower than that then maybe you should be driving when there are less people on the road (late night/early morning) or not at all.

I highly disagree with the "thinking there may be issues up ahead" as that is one of the biggest causes of traffic situations in WA. Oh crap there is an S-curve and I can't see a 1/4 mile ahead of me. Everyone should slow down!!! BS IMO!

I love driving in Southern CA when there isn't traffic. It is like everyone is racing to keep up with one another!

I absolutely agree with you on no reason to go slow in the left lane... my examples were for single lane roads . No excuse what so ever to be in the left lane being an *** (like prius drivers)

Remember, even if you're going the speed limit it is not legal to just travel in the left lane.

I'm all for advanced license endorsements to allow speeding... so don't think I LIKE someone going 45 in a 55. It usually pisses me off... and it's usually people 65 or older doing it. Drives me nuts.

Either way, sometimes there are reasons to go slower than 55 that others may not understand. Perhaps you're just tired and not paying attention. Perhaps the car isn't running perfectly. Perhaps someone missed the sign that went from 45 to 55 and still thinks it is 45. There are a hundred reasons that someone could not be going the speed limit. I don't think we need MORE laws, but less laws. We get fined for looking at cops funny now. We don't need to be giving them another excuse to pull you over.

Again, it drives me batty when people don't do the speed limit... but I'm not for adding more laws for it. I will say that people that people that are getting passed on the right for not going the speed limit and having ample opportunities to get over should be pulled over. And I'll also finish by saying people that are 65 or older should be tested annually / bi-annually.
I am talking about people who are not capable of following traffic laws. People that are too old to drive a car, or people who can't see the signs, or people who are too busy drinking their coffee and seeing the sights, etc. Hopefully this clears it up.

Yep, most people think that
Actually, it is illegal to "poke along in the left lane." This was on Komo a few months ago and the trooper said , "The left lane is for passing, not cruising." 60Mph would suggest cruising.

RCW 46.61.100
Keep right except when passing, etc.

http://search.leg.wa.gov/wslrcw/RCW%...061%20.100.htm

Also
(4) It is a traffic infraction to drive continuously in the left lane of a multilane roadway when it impedes the flow of other traffic.

I drive the same route every morning as do most people. Stating, "oh I am going 57.2 mph in the left lane because I miss that 60Mph speed limit sign every single morning" is not an excuse.

There are not "a dozen other issues" There is ONE reason for NOT going the speed limit: Road conditions.

Quit being so single minded and making up excuses to prove your point.

A) I clearly stated above that what I was talking about wasn't about multi-lane highways. I clearly stated there is never an excuse to be in the left lane getting passed.

B) Not everyone drives the SAME route their whole life. I highly doubt you've been on every road in the united states. So yes, people miss signs... especially when they are lost.

Its not single minded or excuses its facts straight from the drivers book. You stated "Its ok to go less than 55mph sometimes." and then you commented that there are dozens of other reason to drive slow. I am simply stating that there is no reason to drive slow if you can easily drive the speed limit.

As a man involved with the law through employ perhaps you can answer a question.

In your opinion and in general (meaning without any legal liability and not speaking for others in any way shape or form) if traffic was flowing at 60mph and a person performed a "legal" passing manuver on the left, what would be the "safe" speed to accellerate to in order to complete the passing manuver, then return to the right lane?

I've heard 5mph, i've heard 10% faster (6mph at speed limit 60, 7mph at speed limit 70) and "dont make it obvious".... so what say you?

I'm done arguing... we're gonna have to agree to disagree. If you can't accept that people can miss signs when they are in different areas, or are hauling something that is heavy, or that they may be cautious of something they may think is ahead (deer, traffic, etc), or being defensive around weather, or being defensive for other drivers, or hearing something that caught their ear on their car and needed to slow down, etc. The list isn't 1 item. And all of those things have happened to me. My original comment was basic in that there shouldn't be more laws... there are too many as it is... we don't need to give cops MORE excuses to pull us over. /done

^those people missing signs should turn their radios down. That always helps me find where I'm going when I'm not 100% sure where I am.

But if you're constantly turning down your radio you're not looking at the road
