Don't think rod bolts are worth the time?

....think again. Nothing odd on this one, car didn't rev over 7.5k, stock turbo, no evidence of severe detonation. Just thought I'd share the pictures for people that are just "thinking" about putting in ARP rod bolts.

ouch that miller lite tore a huge hole in your crankcase!! i think thats where the problem was :)

NDgsx Aug 14, 2006 10:50 PM

Haha CRAP that was the problem :crap:

Oh and that isn't my engine, it's somebody else on here. Just finally got around to getting some pictures of the carnage.

SpooksEvo Aug 14, 2006 11:05 PM

Miller does that to me all the time!

{thumbdwn} dude, that royally sucks about the motor.

BrewPuBeaver Aug 15, 2006 06:13 AM

wow,

you are 100% sure it was the bolts that were the cause of the carnage? no possible way human error could have happend?

not tryig to start ****, just wondering?

thanks for sharing

brew, rod bolts are the weak link in our engine. doesnt mean a bad tune, high boost, ect wasnt part of the picture though.

evodrivesme Aug 15, 2006 07:02 AM

streight carnage man sorry to see that. next time my motor comes apart im gettin arp rod bolts in there. i learned this after doing the honda thing for a years, their rod bolts are even worse than ours i have seen this exact picture 100 times from stock rod bolts on boosted hondas and such. gl with the rebuild, sleeve it, pistons, rods, ARP ROD BOLTS haha, maybe some bore action :) and that baby will fly again :)

Booyah Grandma

EVO Tweeker Aug 15, 2006 08:56 AM

Ouch.....sorry to see the carnage. I feel your pain.

Nothing better than having to go and get a built motor. Being forced to mod is such sweet sorrow. Take the opportunity to do it right and go fully built! {thumbup}

DahakaJR Aug 15, 2006 10:42 AM

damnit man, that's scary lookin.....

I think he's trying to say this motor SHOULD have had them, not that they were the cause.

codgi Aug 15, 2006 11:07 AM

Ouch! Well there are on the mod list...was going to change both the rod bolts and the head studs.

MeKilla Aug 15, 2006 11:13 AM

i think rod bolts / head studs are on everyones "to do list".

this sucks big time. whos car was it? what were his mods and how much boost was he running?

nvr2fast Aug 15, 2006 11:27 AM

Do you guys know what is involved in replacing the stock rod bolts with the APR ones?

What has to come apart, and how long would it take normally?

Let me post again just so it's clear, it's not my car. My 03 is almost at 60k, no problems.

I got a good look at the rod bearings and the ring lands of the pistons that did not get damage, none of them show any sign of detonation.
I did find both rod bolts from the #2 rod though, both snapped in half. The bottom half of the rod was sitting in the pan, totally intact.
The bolts definetly snapped.

Usually you get that type of failure from high RPMs/high piston velocity, but this car was not reving very high. I honestly think that they f*cked up on the assembly line and streched the bolts. This is why I hate torque to yield fasteners, it's just a stupid idea.

The car had basic mods, intake, ic pipes, TBE, GSC 272s, M7 jet of meth, flash, etc...
