I'm confused about Evo 1 - 3's

I got this kickass book for xmas about the history of the lancer to the Evo IX. It says the only galant parts used in the Evo II for example was the original drivetrain. On the IV they 180 degree'd the engine/trans layout, and the chassis were originally lancers with massive modifications (thru the generations of evos) that really seperates it from even a Lancer IMO.

How come these on these forums, everyone refers to a converted Galant as an Evo I - III? The GSR III's even had AYC controllers, and active rear diffs, and a 1.5 way LSD in front, none of the parts are shared out of a Galant. Evo III's got 3000 GT brakes, but they were scrapped by the IV because they were heavy pigs. So all in all, why does everyone call a Evo powered Galant an Evo III? Just curious as all hell. Oh and yea, there is NO GSR American models... GSR's had S-AYC's!!

(Mitsu learned quickly that the Galant was too big and heavy to be a rally car)

And just to get all snobby on the Lancer drivers, yeah, your chassis is nowhere similar to an Evo's... quit claiming it's the same thing!

The galant vr4's were basically the evo0. The u.s. got the evo 1-3 chassis for the usdm mirage. If you look under the 93-94ish mirages you will see that the exhaust goes down a drive shaft tunnel.

Ahhh yeah, it touches VERY little on the USDM markets just because we didn't really get any Evo's. Oh boy for the Dodge Colts babyee!

It is a good book, but i wish it would included other markets with turbo Mitsubishi's. i.e. dsm's and 89 turbo mirages

The one I have does. They go back to the first lancer turbo, follows the short lived starion and begins with the mirage market only with WRC. It's not nearly as in depth as the lancer models specifically, but there is mention. (For anyone else following along, Mitsu produced the FIRST production cars that were turbocharged back in 1979)

It's called Evo: road car & WRC story. It even explains the TME edition from the exerpts head engineer of the Evo program at the time. He explained why it wasn't the Evo VII (Marketing wanted a TME edition, and the Motorsport division saw it as a way to further modify their racecars to take advantage of new WRC rules. Marketing wanted stickers and different paint, and the engineers had a whole different idea :D The original engineer died after the Evo III, and there is some exerpts from the new engineer. I'm only to the V at the moment, but I've page flipped for pics thruout. :D

It's awesome to really learn about the car I love, the thing is really meant to be a racecar. I love how they recast the 4G63 just to thin out the castings to reduce the engine weight(EvoII), how doors were restructured for thinner glass(evo IV), etc. They really built these cars all in the name of winning. Makes me proud to drive one!

Seeing an Evo X on a lift makes me wanna cry with the crap stamped subframes and control arms, a far stretch from what they built just 2 years before.

i couldn't agree more. It is a true evolution from rally car to family car. Now i know saying that is going to piss some people off but it is true. Yes it is still fast and handles well but the body is in no way designed for racing. It is a much larger bodied car designed for hauling families.

I wonder if the next book will be called, Evo: The WRC to family car story!

Hey Jason, what is the name of the book and author? I would love to get it.

JdmEvo's Jan 15, 2009 03:39 PM

Is your book an American book? Or is it Japanese/Aust/England book? I dunno about the book but I think your book might have some mis-leading information. The engine wasn't swap around till the IV. Also was when AYC was first introduced. And the Evo didn't get Super-AYC till the VIII.

Curious about one of the points you mentioned, the enging flip for evo3.
I thought that started with the evo4.
Interesting insights into the chassis though, would like to read the book myself.

The flip was outta memory... It's a book from England, when I'm home off work I'll get the publisher/author name, etc and put it in here. It very well could of been the IV, but I can't remember I thought it was the III tho
