[Off Topic] Nasty Winter Conditions
To our members who live in the North and Northeast..
Hopefully you're not driving in this frigid weather.
There's reports of over 428 accidents in New Jersey alone. Total Craziness! #ICEZILLA
I can't emphasize this enough >

So, make sure yall have your emergency roadside pack IS IN your vehicle and have some extra energy bars, water, and hot-hands in your kit!

This guy not only survived but was able to walk away with nothing but a scratch or two after being squashed between two semis on I-84, black ice being the cause of the car pile up on Saturday.

This guy should immediately go do a few things:
1. Go buy some lotto tickets!
2. In fact go buy some scratchoffs while he's at it, he's way too lucky!
3. Get a new pair of pants.

Amazing he didn't even get a bruised rib or arm looking at the position he ended up in that wreck. Truly someone was watching over him.
So, (I want to know) what he was driving?
Looks like a pickup to me. However it looks like we're looking at him through the rear driver side window. As far as I can see in the picture it looks like the drivers door is flat against the truck on the left and the rear door was pushed up.

I think you're right!
The guy should probably get a life-time supply of "slim jims" for having been squeezed between two fully loaded semis and still come out the other end, walking tall.

We have been lucky here ,only a couple days of tricky driving but the 2 OS's are doing fine in the snow , tires suck but learning to deal with them because I just cant see switching tires at 5600 miles .
Good luck to those how are getting the worst of this winter

Yeah, for those of you in the Blizzardzone of Juno > Please take extra precautions and be safe out there!
Hopefully yall have ALL your emergency gear and supplies ready at home and in vehicle.
Keep extra blankets, flares and a shovel in the car just to be on the cautious side.
Stay warm you guys & gals!!

To the guys & gals in the north/northeast..
Please be safe out there.
And, if you're running a generator make sure it's moved at least 25ft away from windows, doors to prevent CO from getting inside. Definitely Do NOT run it in the garage! Even with its doors open.

You are making a serious mistake if you do not install dedicated winter tires considering your location. Your stopping distance is directly proportional to the square of your speed and inversely proportional to the static friction between the road and your tire. Tire manufacturers are not giving away the values for static friction as it is not only dependent upon the road surface but also the temperature. This means that is equally important that in the spring one should change back to summer or all season tires to maximize the static friction once temperatures rise. Do yourself a favor and search for tests online, where the benefits of dedicated winter tires are well demonstrated even on dry pavement. If you must be frugal buy steel rims or used alloys on Craigslist or Kijiji and opt for a 16" wheel tire combo as opposed to the more expensive 18" set. The 16" set is not only cheaper but might be a better option for winter. Even if you buy off Kijiji or Craigslist used winter tires you still be safer than now with the all season tires in Syracuse. You have bought one of the safest CUVs on the market when it comes to protect the passengers in case of an accident. Why not invest to avoid it?
Here in this forum more often than not treads that aim to reduce the safety of the OS (e.g. excessive tinting of windows, smoked head and tail lights etc.) are generating more buzz than those that advocate for improving it. In my dictionary the safety of the occupants of the cars are way above anything else, including driving dynamics and desired look. Just my two cents.

Thank you for the tips . I grew up living in the the snow belts of this state and I'm pretty good in the snow. My wife is the one with the issues and her OS will be getting snow tires . At this time it is not really possible because of family illness and the fact that we have to buy her father's house . ( rough January this year ) any ways we are always careful ...thanks again for the advice

I know we haven't seen you online for a bit... Thought you were just busy with work. Didn't realize someone was ill.
If you need to get things off your chest, we're always here.
(Or, if you need to chat in private you can always PM.)

If you are on a budget you might want to consider to take advantage of the strong US $ (due to the fall of oil prices) and drive up here (4 hours drive from Syracuse, again cheap gas). With the current exchange rate you gain an extra quarter after every buck spent here in Canada. There will be winter and a lot of snow in Syracuse next year as well. For two cars it may be an economical and doable option.
For an immediate action, if I were you, I would drive the FWD base OS and would give the 4WD car to my wife, especially if you have more experience as you stated.
