2017 Outlander Sport Towing

I have been researching and researching, and I found this class 3 hitch with 675 Tongue Weight. I have a 5 Bike, Bike Rack and a small 1800lb popup camper. I'm not worried about the Bike rack. My concern is the popup. I have seen people on the forum tow 900lb empty trailer weight with no issue. I know the CVT is the weak link, but im looking at pulling this camper 1-2 times a year, round trip 500mi - relatively all small hwy's and i know to keep it at about 60mph. I do have the extended warranty on the car, lol :) -- would love to hear your thoughts on it.

Welcome to the forum!

It's going to be quite a bit of load.. and frankly I believe you're looking at over 2,000+ lbs with a Full tank of fuel And Family/passengers Plus Camping gear.
First thing I worry about are the brakes.. Granted they are off the larger Outlander, but I'm not sure if they can stop that much weight (especially in an emergency) and possible brake fade.
Regarding the CVT... If you are traveling here in Texas where's it's mostly flat land (everywhere) it "may" be fine for the 500mi trip. Not sure if the stock trans cooler can keep up -if you have any hills to tackle- with that much load.

Those are my thoughts.

Also,
I'd be concerned of understeer..
When I carried about 400lbs of cinder blocks on my hitch, it jacked up the frontend of our O.S. by ~4 inches (from normal)!!

I just pulled a 3 rail motorcycle trailer with a Yamaha FZ-09 on it from Phoenix, AZ to LA and back. 700 mile round trip and the OS killed it. Had plenty of power and more. Braking was good. Just be cautious of your speed, steering, etc... I am actually doing this again but from Phoenix to Austin, TX and back next week. The CVT is the weak link but I can attest to it having no issues.

I am new to the site and can't figure out how to create a new thread.

I purchased a 2018 OS about a month ago, and I purchased a Curt Class III Hitch to install, but now I'm iffy about it. Not sure if I want the hitch on at all times. I also purchased a Curt Basket Cargo Carrier with a straight folding shank, but returned it realizing the exhaust will blow on whatever is in the basket.

I guess what I really want to know is if the hitch takes away from the look of the OS? Also, will it void any warranty by adding an after market hitch?, even though the manual says it can't be used to tow. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.evo...5d5c3b6e1.jpeghttps://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.evo...803b88c88.jpeg

What's nice about my 2012 OS is the hitch blends in really well with the rear bumper. Both are pretty round. It does reduce ground clearance a bit in the back but not by too much. Depends on what look you're after. Our OS is going for more "adventure" outdoors look as others are more city drivers.

I live in a smaller city, but I love to go camping, mostly at the beach. That’s why I wanted the roof racks along with the cargo hitch to carry an ice chest or wood for bonfires. Do you have a picture I can see of yours?

Welcome to the forum Ashenator.

Here's my old thread on hitch/accessories >
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ou...cessories.html

Note: I used a 6" Drop mount, But I flip it around so it's a 6" Rise instead ;)

ashenator Apr 16, 2018 08:49 PM

That’s a really good idea about the 6” drop. Do you have a hitch basket and how does it connect with the 6” lift?

mRVRsport Apr 16, 2018 09:56 PM

oops,
sorry I didn't mean to imply that.

I simply purchased a tray from Harbor Freight that's meant for an ATV..
It comes with a 8" lift as is, so I didn't do any modifications. Works perfectly!

However, if you live near the beach, I'd suggest you spray it with a oil based paint to protect it from rust.

Oh, gotcha! That makes sense.

Just got back from towing a motorcycle from Phoenix, AZ to Austin, TX. It is a little over 1000 miles and we did it all in one day. The OS did GREAT!!! We were averaging around 20-21 MPG at a speed of about 65-70 MPH. RPM's were kept under 3k most of the time, I'd say they were usually at 2200-2500.
