I did mine friday night, took about six hour because I had to run to the store twice.
used a heat gun and they came apart fast.
But it looks great, I'll snap some shots when I a week off this winter.

im finishing up mine now, after they came out of the oven, did anyone else have some oxidation on the lense from it sittin on the damp towel?

PatricksEvilEvo Feb 17, 2013 06:27 PM

Doing mine right now :D one headlight in the oven now, 5 minutes left

Edit, I'd like to add that the amber lenses inside are extremely fragile, my father gave one a light tug to see if it would pop out and it broke in half. Other than that the process is pretty easy and straight forward, I used my Remington knife and slowly pried them apart.

I'd like to figure out how to make this a "jdm conversion" since my amber lens broke. Either paint the bottoms amber and use a clear bulb or use tint film, not sure yet.

figured I'd throw this here as well since I put it in the other how to discussion on the subject. Save yourself a headache with sanding.

you damn nerds need to get more DIY under your belts.

DO NOT WASTE TIME SANDING THE CHROME OFF YOUR HEADLIGHT HOUSINGS. BUY CAN OF YELLOW HEAVY DUTY E-Z OFF OVEN CLEANER (if you dont have some at home anyways) SPRAY ON. LET SIT 5 MINUTES. WASH OFF CHROME TO SEE NICE PERFECT PLASTIC BASE. NO SANDING INVOLVED.

I'm amazed at how many threads I've seen where people are whining about sanding the chrome taking soooooo long and so much detail to get in the grooves. EZ off, SOS pad, 10 minutes. Both done, and nothing but bare plastic left like it'd sit at the factory.

THANK ME LATER SWEETHEARTS! ;)

I'm surprised that doesn't affect the plastic in any way.... Harsh solvents can affect the integrity of the plastic, make it brittle, etc....

if you were soaking it overnight, MAYBE. But no.

It just breaks down the chrome gunk so you can wash it off. 5 minutes. Ive been using ez off to clean coatings/finishes on plastics for years, hell I even use it to remove anodizing from aluminum.

Nice, been looking to do the black out as well. Had it done on my S2K before it made the car looked so good afterward!

Has anyone skipped the sanding process and painted it with plasti-dip?

I spent the time sanding. The point of sanding is to give the paint a rough surface to hold onto.

I just finished painting mine. I used a heat gun instead on the oven. By the second light I figured out that I could just use the gun on a low setting, get the entire rim of the light warm and pryed it apart by hand. I was trying to pry it open on the first light and found that the plastic was soft enough to start to deform and looked kinda bad. definitely everything warm and start working the housing off.
I also used the oven cleaner to strip most of the chrome off, and after 1 week I see no problems painting over what residual chrome was left. I guess I'll report back if things start peeling later
