I guess I'll join you next year @Dallas J

Yikes that sucks. Hope fully that shop stands behind it.

Hey gents. what is this sound? This came out just lightly launching the car. The shop where I got my new engine only had time for this test ... basically the sound goes away when the clutch is depressed (or other way around). I have a new Exedy 4-puck sprung. I've had one of those explode before but it never made noises. any guesses? FW bolt? pressure plate? I'm just hoping its outside the motor lol

They need to measure crankshaft thrust. If that's within spec (should be recorded on engine build sheets) they'll need to pull the trans.

Dallas J Sep 11, 2023 10:40 PM

No matter what, sounds like you're pulling trans.

They just drained the tranny oil today. During practice i was getting some hopping and spinning rear wheels. Nothing strange, never launched hard. I guess i'll bring my brand new tre trans

i've got an annoying issue of 2nd gear that keeps popping out when in gear - only when the car is driven in anger, usually in an autocross/racing setting - no grinding or any other issues, and gear goes in and out fine

could this be a shifter bushing or something simple, or something more complicated?

it's a 6spd built by TRE, probably 9 years old

Id guess bent shift fork or something up with the cable or bushing not getting it fully in gear.

That's definitely a broken gear tooth. Time to yank the trans.

a big chunk. that rpm related sound is misleading. I'll deliver the backup trans this friday

Again, I dont understand why you can do amazing launches and dont break stuff

CaptainSquirts Sep 12, 2023 02:57 PM

It took me like 4 years of launching at autocross at 340 to the wheels(dyno’d 12 years ago) for my first gear to break some teeth while in stop and go traffic. The trick for longevity is to toast the clutch when you launch 🤡.

This is actually why I'm considering going back to a single disc clutch. Twin floater plate warping sucks and Id rather slip the clutch and build heat than destroy axles, rear diff, or trans

I broke the front diff last year. I just have a 4-puck and never launched hard. This clutch actually slips and quite hard to use going up a trailer or backing up a raised driveway :(
