PIRANA's Evo9 MR Rebuild Update!

Its been long over due. I will be updating this thread hopefully faster than before to show the progress done. Actually the car has been finished for a couple of months now. But haven't found the time to upload the new pics.

First, a little background for those that are joining now. I bought the car on Dec 2010. The car was pretty much done and had already been terrorizing V8s in Tennessee for sometime now. The owner had other plans that involved a TT Viper!

The evo was build by AMS and included 2.3L, 850R PTE6262 kit plus basically all of AMS's catalog, tuned by Chris Black and put down 704whp back in 2009. When I bought the car I just thought of driving the piss out of it and enjoy it...so I did!!! But I have a disease and that is modifying cars! So little by little I started modifying the evo to my liking. Still the engine part was left alone. When I bought the car, it had about 15k miles on the engine, and I put another 4k in a year.

One night in a meeting KevinD told me to check the compression since the car was starting funny. Little did I know this was going to be the beginning of a long and expensive endeavor! So here is an update regarding the "rebuild"

First, this is a pic of the evo soon after it left AMS in 2009.

The first night at my house!

So after the meet, I went home and did a compression test....not good. Cyl#2 was dead. #4 wasn't as bad, but a little lower than #1 & #3.

So I drove the car like that for awhile...amazingly still drove good and still in 3 cylinders took on on a slightly modified GTR! But now it was time to start tearing it apart to see what was the problem.

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2920/...7ae4b028_c.jpg

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2900/...a8b27bc7_c.jpg

And voila! At least that's what I thought...a leaking valve seal.

So I sent the head to repair and get clean up; and the bad news came in...the shop said there was nothing wrong with the head, except the leaking valve seal. So I needed to keep looking into the block.

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2927/...054524c4_c.jpg

So block comes out...

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7427/...314fb9a4_c.jpg

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7215/...98d2136859.jpg

Some scoring. Talked to AMS about it and they said it was normal from the side loads.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7298/...6754e0b5_c.jpg

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5107/...3c672652_c.jpg

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7064/...f4d9dff2_c.jpg

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5150/...11fb922e_c.jpg

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5073/...eb194261_c.jpg

And here was the problem. That little bulge on the ring land had pinched the compression ring. From what I can tell, the leaking valve seal created higher temperatures in the cylinder hence melting the ring land. Only 30psi on that cylinder. Oh well, now on to rebuild! :mitsu:

Block ready to be shipped to the machine shop.
https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5469/...2166d30d_c.jpg

The transmission was repaired by ShepTrans back in 2007. I grinded 3rd on a spirited race.{pcfreak}
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7173/...9e4b7e1a_c.jpg

The transfer case was already replaced with a non-ACD unit with a Wavetrac differential and bigger bolt upgrade by Jack's Transmissions while changing the clutch last time.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7173/...505563f2_c.jpg

So this time only the trans was shipped to Jack's Transmissions for the Ultimate Gear upgrade, 4.11 FD and tapered bearing upgrade.
https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2929/...dc88d0f4_c.jpg

Nothing wrong with the clutch but I decided to send it to Quarter Master for a check up and also ordered a new "Street" flywheel to help with daily traffic! All that goo is from the bearing grease.

Lets continue....

So all the components were removed, and whatever needed to be coated was sent to Specialty Performance Coatings in Arlington, TX for ceramic coating. Nothing but a good cleaning for the AMS F1 intake.
https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5550/...22b217c0_c.jpg

The turbo was sent to PTE for repairs and the TiAL was sent for a clean up, new seal and to exchange the cover to purple.

These pipes will end up at SPC for a wrinkle black finish.

More OCD. Replacing all of the OEM bolts with ARP...something I learned from Collin at ToxicFab!
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7349/...1f5244e4_c.jpg

Manifold studs, even for the intake manifold.

SPC came thru and got all my stuff coated.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7194/...beb0d209_c.jpg

Went with Tungsten grey since it keeps its pigment longer.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7313/...38992194_c.jpg

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5219/...883cf8e0_c.jpg

Also coated the coolant hard line and thermostat housing.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7072/...326d64cd_c.jpg

After I got them, I decided to go with AN coolant lines, so in they went to T1R to weld the bungs. They also did a Koyo 4/5/6 radiator, but no pics. Those are EATON hydraulic fittings. Which need to be crimped. NOT CHEAP!!!:crap:
https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2918/...6271c09a_c.jpg

You can see a test hose on the background
https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5284/...0e036852_c.jpg

Got the turbo rebuilt by PTE.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7401/...3ba79460_c.jpg

Yeap, also decided to use Legris stainless steel quick disconnects.
https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2930/...0bae3f51_c.jpg

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7174/...ac8fdc54_c.jpg

And the injectors cleaned and measured.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7202/...6ffbcfac_c.jpg

Meanwhile, found a good deal on a new set of +1mm BC valves, thanks EvoM!

To be mated to a freshly CNC ported, flow benched and exhaust port coated head.

I feel like such a ****bag to my Evo when I see builds like yours:lol:

Initial_r90 Apr 23, 2014 11:24 AM

looks good how do you like the QM clutch ? I'm thinking about getting one for once I go FP red.

Pirana Apr 23, 2014 11:47 AM

I like the clutch. I love the push style bearing...I hate the deceleration rattle it makes. Drives me nuts!!!!

evoforstevo Apr 23, 2014 11:54 AM

God that hardware.........so beautiful

mkreiner Apr 23, 2014 12:12 PM

Really exciting to see someone who takes the time and effort to do something the right way. I'm sure it will pay dividends in longevity. Looks great!

FLOW1 Apr 23, 2014 12:21 PM
