Rise of the Phoenix

When I started building my evo I always had a goal of building the “ultimate street car”. I always keep this in mind as the car keeps evolving. But not only do I love driving it on the streets, I LOVE racing it! Over the years I’ve had a lot of fun and success (wins at Modified Mag’s Ultimate Street Car Shootout, DSM Shootout, Winged Warrior, Sport Compact Shootout, Import Face Off). I had what I thought was the perfect setup, so I didn't really change much over the years. Sadly after 8 years my AMS motor gave up.

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t...psuwj8oby7.jpg

Here is a breakdown of some of the old setup:
AMS 2.3 Stroker
8.5:1 Pistons
Tomei 280 Pro Cams
AMS 850R Turbo Kit (6262)
AMS Race VSR Intake Manifold
AMS Race Intercooler
AMS 3" Intercooler Piping
Tial BOV
ID2000 injectors
AMS 1000 HP Fuel System
AMS C.O.P.
AEM V2 EMS
AiM Dash
Bushwacker Transmission
Exedy/AMS Push Style Triple Metallic Clutch
Torqueline C/F Driveshaft
Ohlins FLAG Series Coilovers
Volk TE37 18 x 9.5
AMS C/F Roof
777hp @40psi
9.72 @144 mph

So the question became do I just rebuild the motor and stick with the standard AMS 2.3 or do I try and build something even bigger and risk giving up power band and drivability. After talking with AMS we decided that the AMS 2.3RR motor with the 4G64 block would be the best motor for me. Also going from 8.5:1 compression to 10.5:1 to help the turbo spool a bit better. I haven’t ran pump gas in over 5 years. This meant that I would now have more RPMs to play with and I could look in to upgrading my turbo setup.

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps6vwxhhto.jpg

After lots and lots of research I picked the PTE 6466. I was hoping to not lose much spool and pick up a lot more on the top end. With my 6262 making 777hp I was expecting a lot out of the 6466. Also I needed a turbo kit as I wanted to move to a V-band setup from my AMS ford 5 bolt kit. Forward facing is all the rage these days but I needed the ability to run an air filter. Luckily my friends over at Buschur Racing make an amazing kit with lots of room for a filter!

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t...psr4truhyh.png

With some Help from my buds Greg, Jarrod, and Rob I was able to get the motor back in the evo and to AMS Performance in just under a week! They asked me to leave the car with them so they could dial in the tune and get drivability perfect.

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t...psd4zavmbc.jpg

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t...pslvuy7rtf.jpg

After waiting for what felt like forever I got a phone call. The car was at 901hp @ 32psi but the injector duty cycle was at 90% and they didn't want to go much higher than that. I told them I was comfortable running 95ish and they should push it more! haha

After a few hours I got a 2nd call at the car was making 930hp @ 36 psi and the fuel was pushed as far as they felt they could. The good new was the power band was sick. It stayed over 900hp for more than 2500rpm! Over 600tq from 5000-8000 rpm!!!

Here is a video of the pull! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlPb...ature=youtu.be

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t...psjli3d8ij.jpg

I cant wait to get back to the track and see how she runs! Car is going to be a handful thats for sure!

Looks awesome!

STLEVOIX Apr 9, 2015 01:45 PM

Congrats on the numbers. I guess that AMS 1000hp fuel system isn't really a 1000hp fuel system

Haha I thought the same thing! I bet AMS was thinking 1000hp to the crank though. It's just two 255's.

STLEVOIX Apr 9, 2015 01:56 PM

900 horse at 32lbs is amazing for a 6466. You think if you had bigger pumps you get reach 1k?

Bruzewski Apr 9, 2015 02:01 PM

AMS Thought it might be possible but I would be pushing the wet block to far at that point.

heel2toe Apr 9, 2015 02:06 PM

Amazing car, absolutely amazing, well done!!!

What kind of fuel is this done on? If its ethanol then that is where the disconnect is as ethanol requires more fuel which I'm sure you already know...just a thought

Bruzewski Apr 9, 2015 02:10 PM

Yeah it's on E85. That's probably is the reason that the fuel system is maxed before 1000hp

06MREvo Apr 9, 2015 02:27 PM

930whp, well damn! She sounds hungry on the dyno! Good luck & be careful at the track sir, I'm sure she's a whole different animal now!

6spdlegend Apr 9, 2015 04:07 PM

Those are amazing numbers and a beautiful power band. Serious question- how long do you expect the motor/trans to hold up at that power level?

Bruzewski Apr 9, 2015 04:32 PM

Ha ha I would love to know! The old AMS motor lasted 8 years at 700+ hp. The trans not so much. I'm hoping for 6 years on the motor and a couple years on the trans

stiffdogg06 Apr 9, 2015 05:07 PM

8 years with 700whp is awesome!

Bruzewski Apr 9, 2015 05:31 PM

Yeah for sure!! I had a great run!

how many miles and was it driven hard for 8 years? if so that's truly amazing...

Bruzewski Apr 9, 2015 07:47 PM

Around 28,000 miles!

pakevo4 Apr 9, 2015 09:44 PM

amazing.what a monster.

PureDsm Apr 10, 2015 08:41 AM

Bruzewski, amazing car. I have seen it multiple times on FB.

Can I ask a favor?

Can you post a pick of your front core support so I can see where you mounted your hood pins?
Im torn on my location for my carbon hood.

PureDsm Apr 10, 2015 08:45 AM

Looking closely at your pics, did you just use these holes that iv highlighted in Red?

I'm on a 2 year old Buschwaker now. But Dan just rebuild my spare for me with a new new parts. We'll see how they work. Should be here next week.

wreckleford Apr 10, 2015 05:31 PM

Nice.

I didn't realize before that the 2.3rr was a sleeved 2.4 block. I am guessing it is a long rod setup to allow the rpms.

EDIT: Looking closely maybe those are just o-ring grooves.

batty200 Apr 12, 2015 11:45 PM

I always wondered how strong a sleeved 2.4 with an 85 mm bore and standard style pistons would be. That or a 2.3 long rod would both be awesome engines. Since AMS doesn't really release specs too much I wonder if it is a 2.2 crank and rods just with the larger 2.4 blocks bore making it a 2.3 that can rev high.

batty200 Apr 12, 2015 11:46 PM

No mater what this is this is a super power band. I am sure the car is amazing to drive.

JTEVO2932 Apr 13, 2015 01:34 AM

Looking good Dave cant wait to check it out at the shootout!

I guess no need to worry about cracking my block. Is it filled?

Interesting interpretation. Keep shiny side up!

Awesome build. Subscribed for the future updates.

Bruzewski Apr 17, 2015 07:18 AM

I had my CCW’s powder coated to match my new color scheme. They turned out awesome!

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps7bq0uhz0.jpg

I also took the car to get an alignment as I had dropped the front sub frame to put in a sway bar. I found that the car had a s*** load of toe in. I wonder if that would have affected the HP readings on the dyno…

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps3aus17wq.jpg

While I was there I got the drag tires mounted!!

dam mate thats a tuff looking ride

XcreatonX Apr 25, 2015 08:45 PM

Clearly the parts combo is working well together. Congrats on the awesome numbers. What were the boost levels on the 6262?

b16a95eg Apr 26, 2015 10:40 AM

What Final Drive are you running?

Bruzewski Apr 29, 2015 07:00 AM

Got a chance to go to the track last weekend! The prep was really bad. haha. On the old setup I was getting high 1.4 60 foots on almost every pass. Well I was only getting 1.6-1.7 at national trails... The good news is the car went 152 mph! I never made a pass on high boost but I'm really pumped to get back out on a better track.

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t...psx5fjeppi.jpg

V8HAHA Apr 29, 2015 09:28 AM

Good ish. I wish I could get my 1/8 mph up to 114. Ill be out this Friday to try and get the 150mph trap also. Glad to see you enjoying the new build. Now get Greg's car fixed so you guys can hit the track again.

Dave what bore are you using? I am at 87mm .020 over and I need some confidence to push mine  My fear is getting it to the track then having it push coolant and take me into the wall. I am going to push my car extremely hard soon.

I have a feeling you are probably standard bore though. I notice your block is oringed. Mine is not. Mine is half filled though.

My head is oringed though. Your graph looks amazing.

Its more the .020 over... haha

Copper o-ring in the block. full wet block!

Quite a nice build!! Just got the chance to look this over!!

TWM Performance Jun 12, 2015 12:52 PM

Holy crap, 152mph in the 1/4? Rocketship spec

- Renato

MadBoostedEvo Jun 14, 2015 05:58 AM

The build came out spectacular! Your Evo 8 is a huge inspiration for my X. As a fellow Michigander and AMS supporter, I have to say that your build is second to none. Keep up the good good!

Bruzewski Jun 15, 2015 08:03 AM

Thanks guys!

I went back out to the track a few weeks ago and was able to get a 152.79 mph still havent ran full boost yet.

Not sure the next time I'll be at the track. There are no races in June and July for some reason.
