Evo Down, but not out!
 

I was getting on the highway, long right hand turn downshift to second during corner entry, give some maintenance gas, exit the corner at around 5k give it more gas and then some bad noises and she died right there. No cloud of smoke, nothing dramatic just sputtered and died. No obvious problems (no windows) cranks over fine doesn't sound terrible, I checked most of the minor things it could be and they are all fine so I'm guessing this is going to be something more serious. I have a new compression tester showing up later today so I'll know for sure how bad this is gonna hurt. Pulled the plugs, they look fine, tested all fuses, verified I'm getting power at the coils and the injectors, pump sending plenty of fuel when actuated from evoscan. The car has oil within proper range, I haven't had a chance to align the timing marks but i did pull the cover and the belt is there and it doesn't seem like its jumped. Its the stock bottom end with 160k miles on it so I'm not upset if it needs a rebuild. TBH even if its not related to the bottom end, I'm guessing compression is gonna come back low anyway so this is probably going to be a rebuild regardless. I do have a log of the event attached below for those curious. Really nothing too crazy, no over boosting AFR's look fine, just a couple of counts of knock. the 02 Sensor is the wideband, its an older zeitronix which is non linear so i just interpret the value from their non linear table. I'm going to go over the logs from the last few days, maybe it was hurt from a previous event and was just waiting to give out. Updates to follow.

Fuel pump died?

I dont think so. pulled the return line off the regulator and actuated the pump through evoscan, it filled up a beer bottle with E-85 real quick. I suppose the regulator could have gone bad. It would be ironic if this was a fuel pressure problem.

Are you on SD or MAF?

MAF, i did a visual, the honeycomb didn't get sucked in or anything.

if the compression test comes back not terrible I'll start digging into relays and sensors. I do get RPM and airflow hertz while cranking so that kinda makes me think the maf and crank sensor are working.

Are injectors firing?

im not sure, i know bypassing my injector driver box and letting the ecu control them directly didn't help at all. I also know there is voltage at the injector and i see IPW in my log. Post compression test ill start scoping everything.

I think this could be the beginning of an epic story.

watch it turn out to be a malfunctioning sensor. :lol::lol:

a part of me wants it to be something easy like the cam sensor, but another part wants to do a build.

So it's sucking and squeezing, these are from a cold engine. So, it would seem you're probably not getting spark.

Yah it's looking that way. Do you know if the injectors trigger off the cam or crank sensor? I know the crank sensor is good because the fuel pump is coming on and I'm logging rpm. I measured battery and 5v at the cam sensor harness. I'm gonna bust out the oscilloscope and go gremlin hunting hopefully tomorrow.

Did you check the ignition fuse under the dash?

I want to say everything is triggered/run by the crank sensor, and the cam sensor only provides the timing of when stuff fires.

Go get one of these, makes it easy to check for spark.
