06 MR - The Baby Hauler Build

Hello all! I have had my Evo for a few weeks now and decided it is time to start modding. I am starting out with a pretty much stock and unmolested 55k mile 06 MR special edition with the no lift aero package. The only upgrade it has at the moment is a Tomei Ti exhaust which is loud but sounds great and a JDM rear bumper. This car is officially named the "baby hauler" cause that was my excuse to the other half in order to get it. None of my other vehicles are really baby friendly (and that just meaning fits the car seat). Besides hauling the kid around, it is also going to be my new auto cross car. I have had fun in my current dedicated track car but its time for something different. For this coming up season of racing, its going to be all about getting to know the car in close to stock form. We will call it phase 1. I am shooting for anywhere between 300-350whp on 91 octane. Like most people, I will be doing all the work myself as I dont trust other peoples work. Plus when something gets screwed up, I know its my fault!

Here is a list of what has already been ordered for phase 1 of the build

- Tactrix cable
- 3 port WG solenoid
- AEM Wideband
- OMNI Map sensor

Once I get around to installing all that, I am going to start messing with the tuning software. I already sucked out the stock cal and starting looking over the software. Yep, like nothing I have ever used before... I am by no means a professional tuner but I have tuned a lot of different cars. This program is very detailed which I like but the way Evos are tuned is just different then what I am used to. Its going to take some getting used to and a lot of trial and error. Anyways, after I get the tune dialed in, more parts will go on. Step 2 of phase 1 will include....

- Turbosmart WG
- Lower intercooler piping
- o2 housing
- Down pipe

At that point, phase 1 will be done and it should be about time for me to start the racing season. I plan on leaving the car as is until I learn it. Then I move on to suspension goodies which is phase 2.

And of course, pictures!

Congrats on starting your build! Looks like you have a clean, top edition (MR SE) evo. I don't think this will be hauling babies around for too long ;) Your area looks familiar, very much socal. I'm in San Diego myself.

Thanks guys! We need more CA guys!

I got the tuning software all hooked up and working. Pulled out the factory cal so that I can start doing the mods for the 3 port boost solenoid. Also did a couple logs last night to get used to the logging software. It all seems pretty good so far. Just got to wait for my wideband to get here and the fun begins!

I would consider tonight another successful night. After hours of reading, I came up with enough info to make 2 base maps. First one is for the 4 bar map. If that works, I made a 2nd map for the 3 port boost solenoid (based on the 4 bar map of course). Not sure how that part of the tune is going to go haha. I'm going to do the o2 via serial port directly to my laptop so that should be all that's needed before I start tuning. Ohh, got to get some wire for the welder too so I can put in an o2 bung.

Moar parts showing up! Now just to find time to install them. Also, a huge thanks to AEM for the awesome deal on the wideband!

I also realized that Tuning Technologies is 1 block away from my work. Had a nice conversation with them on Friday and might be able to do some trade work for a dyno session. Things are looking better everyday!

Since the last post, I got some things done. Not much but its a good start.

- 4 bar map is installed
- ECU is programmed for new map/boost logging
- Wideband is temporarily installed and working (dont know where I want to mount it yet)
- Tuning has begun. 6 counts of knock and 9.9 afr. Thanks Mitsu for the great base tune...

Things I still need to do

- Figure out the odd o2 logging issues
- Install 3 port boost solenoid
- Tune for more boost

Off to a great start! Looking forward to seeing more.

Thanks Pal! I was off to a good start....

Now we run into problems. Well 1 problem and it has nothing to do with tuning. My rear drivers side blinker is out and it's not the bulb. The good news is that it's not that odd blinker/lights/I dont know what else, red box dealio thing. I get a pulse output from it but it doesnt make it back to the light. Sooo..... broken wire somewhere from the control module to to the light. I was hoping it was somewhere from inside the trunk to outside at the light but it's not. I'll keep digging.

It's late so I just did a temporary jumper. Everything works again. Even had the baby help out!

People, this is why you never take your vehicle somewhere to get the oil changed. The PO had the oil changed right before I got the car and this is how much they put in....
