Zach's Evo 8 build (Restoration)
8 Attachment(s)
Hello everyone, my name is Zach and I recently purchased an 03 Evo 8 for 2k. The car has been sitting for over 3 years. Overall it's in fair shape. It currently has 105xxx miles. It does run and drive. The owner stated it will need a battery and alternator. I will be planning to replace those parts and perform the much needed maintenance on it. After that replace any bits and pieces and go on from there.
The car has a turbo back invidia exhaust, Injen intake pipe and intercooler piping. It also has a boost, a/f and voltage Prosport gauges. |
We await your updates! Super nice!

That's a steal! For that price I would check to see how the compression and leak down numbers stack up. If that Evo has a working powertrain then that's the best deal of all time. Count yourself lucky!

Replaced battery with a Napa 6548 https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.evo...aaf54e699c.jpg Removed wheel, CV axle and caliper to replace the alternator, belt and tensioner. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.evo...e8f5f214af.jpg But I ran into seized caliper bolts which both broken upon removal. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.evo...dc919c8bf0.jpg I tried to weld the bolts out but no luck . I didn't want to waste much time so two reman calipers were ordered. When I get more time I will try to get the bolts out of these. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.evo...3e00d2719f.jpg Old & New. The only thing I had to get was a different belt I didn't realize it was too short till I had the old one off lol. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.evo...f2b95a9094.jpg Finally system is charging :) https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.evo...8555389ef6.jpg New caliper installed and bleed brakes thanks to the wife for helping. Planning in near future calipers to be painted red again. Only reason I didn't was to get my Z back into the garage. |
I worked on the car a little bit today. It had a rough idle when warm. So I switch plugs with new ones and filled fuel tank with sea foam and added some to the engine oil before I change the oil. It did help the idle a little bit but not much. Cold idle is perfect but once it gets up to temp it idles like it has a big cam.

Idle when warm resolved
I looked up the correct vacuum line diagrams and found the line on the EGR valve was disconnected. Reconnected and let idle for a bit warm and no more problems. Also to note I took the Evo for our first spin on the road and tell you what I'm pretty surprised at the pep. I didn't go full throttle or anything but it has some good pull. No weird noises pops or grinds :)

Update
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.evo...3882d864ba.jpg
Removed the bad rear wiper assembly and installed the delete plug. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.evo...41c30b0c01.jpg I will have to remove the horrible window tint soon. It's actually purple which you can't see well in the pictures. |
Cams
So after doing further research it appears I do have cams. The cams are not hollow and looking through the oil cap hole I see a number etched into the cam AM003 which is a HKS 272 for the intake side. I will be taking the valve cover off in the next few weeks to replace the valve cover gasket and will get some more pictures of the cams. I'm thinking of getting the valve cover powder coated .
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.evo...7c66ff003f.jpg AM003 you might have to zoom in to see. |
For that price I'm curious how the rear subframe looks.
Regardless, you still got a steal. Welcome aboard! |
A field find. Nice. Im curious about the backstory of this car, why the seller gave it away for free basically and why it ended up rotting in a field or if it was even his to begin with. I know there are many situations like this with all cars but when I see it happen to an evo 8/9 it cuts deep :(
Also post some pics of the undercarriage! The way it sat I expect its corroding like it was sitting at the bottom of the Atlantic ocean for 3 years. |
The plan is to get the whole undercarriage blasted and undercoated. As for what I know about the car it has lived it's life in 3 states PA ND and NY. Car has a clean title and the name on the title was the same guy I purchased it from. Looks like I would be the 3rd owner. I would like to find more information about it too. The 2nd owner stated the 1st did all the modifications but didn't really know what was done to it lol. Said it was fast and had a tune that's all he said about it.
