Front facing turbo without air filter?

Hi Team,

Ive been getting mixed reviews and responses locally and need to know what your thoughts are on running my turbo without a filter?

Ive seen the guys in America running their evo turbos without air filters, my question is the obvious. What of it rains, does it really damage your turbo or just damage your spark plugs? Or are there any damages at all?

I currentlty expose the turbo only during shows.

I will be running Mesh on my Turbo so there's no leaves or any bugs that's forced into the turbo but what about rain?

Weather here in NewZealand is very unpredictable so rather play it safe than sorry.

This is my setup

and this is what i am planning to do

rain isnt the issue at all. it will eat all the rain that gets in there. its dirt and other foreign objects that are the problem.
i recently made the mistake of upgrading the turbos on my pickup right before moving and didnt have time to modify my filters to fit so i have been stuck driving around the past couple months on open turbos and havent had any issues. I even had to drive up and down a dirt road and everything seems ok but i was really careful to drive slow.
i have probably put about 1000 miles on it in the last month and a half.

Looks cool, but see all the rock chips, bugs, etc on your bumper after you drive? That will be hitting your impeller while it's spinning.
a filter is really the only way to protect it. Can you at least fit an HKS mushroom filter on it?

Thats awesome, that's what i meant by a mesh. Ive done a DIY and pretty much looks like that. Question is, rain does not affect it at all? Small bugs might go through but wouldn't damage anything?

Thanks for your help

rain is never going to be an issue, i dont know why you are so worried about a little water and not bugs and dirt and rocks.

Or you could just use a filter and not worry.

x3 on the filter. Mesh is for drag only IMO, not for a street car.
